Rohit Sharma: Tried to convince Dravid to stay on as coach

Rohit Sharma has disclosed that he tried to convince Rahul Dravid into continuing as India coach but the efforts were futile. "I tried convincing him to stay but I think there are a lot of things that he needs to look after. I personally enjoyed my time with him. I'm sure the rest of the guys will say the same. It's been great working with him and I hope I'm not going to say anything (more)," Rohit said with a lump in his voice inescapable.

Rohit and Dravid had the best of professional equation, their association as captain and coach starting in November 2021. Rohit, in fact, recalled that Dravid was his first skipper and he enjoyed working with him. "Look, my equation with him goes a long way, a long way back from the time he came to do this job. Actually he was my first international captain when I made my debut in Ireland," Rohit said.

"And such a big role model for all of us growing up. We watched him play and we know what he's achieved personally as a player and also what he's done for the team over the years. Battling out the team from difficult situations. That is what he is known for. He's shown a lot of determination throughout his career. And that is something that when he came here as a coach, you know, I wanted to learn from him. And it's been very fruitful. Other than the big silverware (the World Cup). I think we won all the major tournaments and series."

Would the team want to win the World Cup for Dravid? Rohit stopped short of saying that. "I don't want to say anything more."

But what if the team failed once again, just like in the World Cup back home late last year? "Life goes on," the India captain said, refusing to put any pressure or expectations on himself and the teammates. "I'm just going to go and play my game and help the team in whatever way I can and get everyone together to play as a team. That is what I'm going to be focusing on"

Sharma reckons they have won everything, he is no longer hungry and nothing will change if flop again... :pop2:

Is this a joke when he made the following comment "Other than the big silverware (the World Cup). I think we won all the major tournaments and series."? There're barely 3-4 decent teams and ICC tourneys are the only thing that count. We don't want to win Cycle Agarbatti series - they don't count for anything. The fact these @$$hats haven't been able to win one ICC tourney for more than a decade and don't think that's a problem is concerning. ICC trophies are the only trophies which count and these bozos find nothing wrong in not winning one.

Rohit Sharma should be the last person to recommend anyone. He himself doesn't deserve a spot in the team, is a non-performing captain, pushed out likes of Rinku from the team, got in Chahal back, and now recommending Dravid to stay as a coach? What else? Bring back KL Rahul, DK, Rahane and Pujara as well?

We were, by some distance, the best team in the World Cup. You guys are counting it as a failure

But thats the issue right, it was a failure of management and leadership and not the skillset. Their strategy and cowardice cost us a world cup which we should have easily won otherwise

Most are just selective blaming only those things which did not work.

1. Bringing back Iyer and Rahul immediately after recovering from 6 month long injuries was a brave call.

2. Not going for Thakur's little batting after Pandya's injury was another brave call.

3. In fact, both Shami and Siraj were not in the setup when the last management left.

4. Using home advantage is not cowardice. (Even if someone believes it is, it cannot be a criticism).

But the only thing people remember is Suryakumar Yadav.

We were the best team in 2019, we were the 2nd best team in 2015 in first round. India has significantly higher W/L record over any team by some distance in world cup matches since 2011.  That is why not winning the final will always remain as a black day in Indian cricket.

No, the only thing people remember is that we choked in yet another trophy.

Reaching semis is NOT an achievement in cricket at all, in any tournament there are barely 4-5 strong teams in form, Australia. India, England and maybe NZ. South Africa are perennial chokers, pakistan is our bunny. , West indies, sri lanka are all in same category. you defeat a couple of minnows and Pakistan and you reach the semis. After that to reach finals is just one more win, particularly on home ground in home conditions.

Celebrating semis and finals like some achievement for a sport which has so few strong countries, is baffling

You can make a million excuses for choking, we havent won an ODI trophy for 11 years and a T20 trophy for 17+ years now. And thats all that matters.

That has nothing to do with cricket or our team.

Bad memories are always a far stronger mnemonic than positive emotions, psychologically speaking.

Let's not go overboard, but the way we dismantled NZ in the Semis and South Africa earlier is unheard of. Perfect tournament till the last match.

If we won, we would be having 450 threads that this is the best ODI team of all time. Hell I'd have opened 20 of those.

But as I said, its very very easy to reach semis in cricket. SA has choked in ever single big match, they have NEVER reached the final of world cups. Reaching semis is not an achievement in cricket. After that we had the home advantage big time in the semis.

The only two matches which matter in world cups are semis and finals (because as i said, defeat minnows and one team like SA, Pak, Windies, Sri Lanka in your group and you are guaranteed to reach semis) and we have choked on both these stages for a long long time now.

You can't be the best team in a tournament without batting depth and  batting allrounders.

Afghanistan has more claim for the world cup in this case as without Maxwell scoring a lucky 190+ score they were the only team who gave aussies a real challenge whole world cup.

By that logic, all Australians except Maxwell are chokers. Because they would have lost their "most important" match by a margin of 200 runs.

You are not wrong here that Afghanistan worked hard and deserved to qualify, but you don't see the same hardwork in case of India. You just take everything for granted. It was not always easy, it took us at least 30 years in ODIs to be a top team.

How do you minnows are minnows? Try to answer it scientifically.

There are just four good teams is not true. 'Good' is subjective here. We four are just better than other teams (there are financial reasons, I know).

Try to understand my point of view.

We have high expectations because we 'easily' beat our opponents in bilateral games. But Imagine if we lose these series regularly, would you consider us a better teams. We are simply a better team because we are supposed to beat minnows and lower ranked test teams to semis. If we crash out in group stage, we ain't reaching finals. Our expectations will drop and we won't be as critical, I guess. So, are league games as easy and unimportant as you think?? Answer it honesty.

Fan frustration is real, but it's natural for all sports bodies to have some problems. Australia has problems too, but results favour them so you don't get to see them (or ask locals).

The best team is the one which wins the tourney. Period. You can't be the best if you choke, or fail to show up when it counts. We're no different from SA of 90s and early 2000s - great in bi-laterals and chokers in tourneys. We're the first team to not win the tourney at home since 2007. So yeah it was a huge failure.

I watched Dravid from the beginning of his career to retirement. He killed the momentum and slowed things down in tests and ODI without fail. His style was more effective in SENA when others were failing. Has the media made him a superlegend?
