yeah that too is a thing though.

 

lakshya has not reached his peak. this might be him peaking.

 

sindhu also used to beat young tty.

Unlike in cricket, field is deeper in hockey, competition stiffer. Dutch in QF, possibly Bel in SF, not ideal, even their peak may not be enough. 

 

Also there is a curse in Olympics for them. They have won lots of big tournaments but Olympics only once in their entire history, in 2004 Athens. They have lost too many major knockouts in the last 10 years.....in bilaterals, group stages they are a different beast, like Indian cricket team in recent years. In cricket they are famous for mental toughness, but in hockey that aspect of theirs pales in comparison to the German team. So yeah too many factors.

Nadal was like 16-6 h2h with Djokovic at end of 2010.  Then he decided to play doubles with him and a bunch of exhibitions in South Americal.  Nadal had the "swagger" then. Fed was number 1 but Nadal had the swagger.

 

Djokovic basically studied him and what works against him.

 

After that came 2011 and 7 straight finals defeats to Djokovic. The Nadal swagger was gone and he was never the same player again after that - esp at Wimbledon. 2011 Wimby final whipping by Djokovic and Nadal never played a Wimbledon final again after 5 straight finals before that.

Djokovic improved a lot in 2011 by fixing his diet and fitness. Also changed his gamestyle from aggressive baseliner (Agassi like) to more of a grinder. He improved against the entire field, not just Nadal. Losses for Nadal kept piling in 2011 early season outdoor HC swing and clay, and he lost it in his head against Nole, tide turned again in RG 2012 and it would take Nole until 2014 Wimbledon to get back to winning ways in GS consistently.  Nadal was also tired after his tiring 2010 season where he won 3 GS (before that he ticked so many boxes in 2008 and '09), so a dip was par for course which happened in 2011.

 

Too many nuances in these rivalries, I can't explain my thoughts in one small post.

In hockey they are up against mentally tough teams like Bel, Ger, Neth, Arg.

 

Who are the equivalents in cricket? Eng except recent surge were rubbish, RSA chokers, NZ pushovers, declined WI, and the SC sides. 

 

Hockey being a more global sport than cricket, domination is that much harder.

Have won 3 wcs but not much olympics so yes I guess.

he needs to see how Momota plays him and what a semi injured Prannoy did last time he beat Axelsen. That was an epic match in his home turf where he came from behind to defeat him.
