In cricket terms, is it like losing Kohli or losing Bumrah?

Not this Kohli :phehe:

Talking about comparison with the T20 WC winning team, Bumrah would be Sreejesh, Rohit would be Harman. Maybe Rohidas=Pandya.

PCs are a big part of modern hockey and our strengths are greatly diminished now, more in defence but attack also.

A team like Aus/Bel/Neth/Ger would have blitzed us after the red card, even at the cost of losing control/possession/turnovers etc. And they would have gladly allowed us to hit 2-3 but they would have pumped in 5-6 as well. As someone said Brits adopted the Southgate method today, not a good idea when you have 1 man superiority for 3/4th of the game. Just increase the pace of play, make direct attacks, tire out the other team. Tactically they were no match for us today. Our posters were unnecessarily harsh on our guys. Our only path of winning was to form a wall in our own half and take it to shootouts, we did precisely that.

Sreejesh saw lots of action today, Brit GK was a spectator for most part. Lack of game time showed in the shootouts where the Brit keeper couldn't lay a stick on any of our 4 shoots.

Self belief comes when you are behind .That guy never looked out when he was behind in both games.

Maybe I am reading it wrong .

He is a former champion and will finish as a badninton goat. Why should he lack self belief?

Today's hockey match was like 1990 FIFA WC final. Argentina defender got red card early, then Maradona and co. played whole game just to take it to shootouts, they had a world class GK. Defensive masterclass but ref controversially awarded a penalty to Germany late in the game and Ger won 1-0.

This is very much like 100m women's race. Sha'carri richardson was the favorite but  Julien had great start and kept going that is where self belief of under dog comes into picture.

Sen had great start on both games, But felt in both games he lacked that to beat the best. he needed to do better tactically also.

You can still attack one man down for 2 minutes, maybe 3-4. Teams don't do that even if they get yellow card, except perhaps Australia in meaningless matches.

But one man down for 42 minutes, think of it as 21 consecutive green cards with no respite, or 4 yellows, 1 green. Who in their right mind would even think of wasting energy on attack. 10 vs 11 in hockey is much tougher than in football because of the pace of play, shorter pitch dimensions (top team needs under 8 seconds to turnaround from its D to opponent goal, Simranjeet did it in 6 seconds in Tokyo bronze match). Then the biggest difference is PCs in hockey which are easier to convert than free kicks or corners in football.

Belgium made the final in Rio, won gold in Tokyo.

Won 2018 WC, made 2023 WC final.

Surely due a bad match in KOs soon.

@express bowling rolling substitution in hockey makes it easier to induct juniors. I saw all India games in Asian Champions Trophy last August, young Krishan and experienced Sreejesh would alternate with keeping duties in quarters. Even in the final when we were put under pressure by Malaysia they alternated in duties. And so many youngsters in the XI, even a local boy called Karthi Selvam, he will be an integral part of 2026 WC squad or latest 2028 LA. Physically bit weak now, will be bullied by goras. He is where Vivek Sagar Prasad was in 2021-23, similar build, and as good in skills.

But we expected this, no?

Hockey more than made up for other disappointments, you had to see the match man. I got a bigger high today than in the T20 WC final win.

Great win with only 10 men! Couldn’t wake up at 4am! Will not miss Semis now!! Lovelina had won bronze in Tokyo , was hoping her to get past WFs.  Take that angrez!! Any match the GB loses is always good!

She was against top seed and Tokyo silver medalist. Anyway I have given up on boxing, don't understand the judging.

Vincent Vanasch the Belgian goalkeeper is another legend of the sport, Similar in stature to Sreejesh, same age. If it goes to shootouts Belgium is probably toughest to beat, but sports can be funny, they are getting frustrated here. @neel roy

Big miss by Spain there, got to take those
