In an unusual development, double World championships bronze medallist Vinesh Phogat competed in two Olympic weights, 50kg and 53kg, on the same day and emerged as the winner in the lighter division in the selection trials for the Asian wrestling championships and Asian Olympic Games qualifier held at Patiala on Monday.

 

 

Vinesh demanded that the 53kg trials be held on Tuesday to let her compete in both weights. After it was decided that the selection could not be stretched to the next day, the ad-hoc committee conducting the trials along with the technical committee decided to allow her to fight in both weights since ‘there is no rule which stops a wrestler from competing in two weights in a trial.’

She is normally a 53kg wrestler!

Sable is there too but very little hope of medal . That's one category where a 4th place medal would actually be encouraging.

Trials were held on that same day because they tried to accomodate her demands at the expense of  other wrestlers. 

She has had previous when it comes to being disqualified for being overweight.

Phogat, who usually competes in the 53kg, cut down to 50kg for the trials with Antim Panghal having already won a quota in her pet event. The 29-year-old Phogat defeated Shivani 11-6 in the trials after trailing 1-4 in the women’s 50kg final to book her spot in the Indian team. Phogat’s win, however, was not short of any drama. She had earlier delayed the women’s 50kg and 53kg trials by more than two hours by demanding a written assurance from authorities that a final trial will be conducted in the 53kg, where Panghal has earned a quota, before the team for the Olympics is finalised, as per a PTI report. She also requested to be able to compete in two weight classes – 50kg and 53kg, on Monday and the Indian Olympic Association’s ad-hoc committee allowed it.

Yes. So that was her decision. Even if was held on a different day she would have lost.

Trials were already scheduled on the same day.

 

But there is confusion on the rules. India Wrestling said you can try out for two categories, UWW said you cant. 

 

So if you can try out for two categories then they naturally should have scheduled trials next day. whats the point in letting athletes try for two weight categories if they cant fight at the right body weight. Or those chomus should have simply said you cant try out for both and Phogat would have to pick one - most likely 53 kg. Dumb*ery all round cost us at least a silver

How can you say she would have lost on a different day if she was 53 kg then. 3 kg makes a lot of difference

Doctor said she drank excess water yesterday. No need to search for conspiracies or hypothetical scenarios. 

 

Nutritionist *ed up somewhere in the calculations and price had to be paid.
