How's his contribution any bigger than that of Ganguly's?

Lead the team from front for 1983 WC win against mighty WI.

Had that not happened, Indian Cricket wouldn't have come to this level which we are seeing now.

Plus also the first fast bowler for India who showd India can also produce quicks. For a good time of 6-7 years he was a genuinely top class bowler.

Ganguly was a terrific captain in it's own sense when he picked up the team from the match fixing fiasco. He built the team from scratch.

I put a lot of importance on Teams winning LOI World Cups and big Test series, especially away from home. My choice of players is based on this. Cricket is a Team game and players who have contributed majorly to big wins for Team India get my vote.

Ranks 4 to 11 maybe interchangeable but one has to put someone ahead of others in a rank list.

1. Bumrah .. Team India's biggest issue since 1932 was lack of strike bowlers outside Asia. When it came to pace bowling, we looked like associate nations. Bumrah completely transformed this aspect and we have started winning big test series and big test matches outside Asia regularly including the 2 test series wins IN Australia.

Also, Bumrah has redefined T20 bowling in World cricket with extreme low ER and high SR while bowling at high pace. T20 World Cup 2024 Win and MOTS as a result.

Our first pacer who has very low averages, low strike rates and low ER in all 3 formats and can bowl at 90 mph too. Exceptional !

2. Younger Dhoni .. As captain and batsman, he has won us both ODI World Cup and T20 World Cup. Champion's Trophy in addition. Ability to actually win multiple ICC trophies is what definies legacies of LOI teams and a younger Dhoni made this possible.

He had the vision to strengthen the lower middle order in LOIs with Yuvraj, Raina and himself. And this won us big trophies. Despite being the captain, he did not bat at the top to score centuries.

Sadly, his approach changed a lot at an older age.

3. Younger Kapil ..  Won us our first World Cup as captain when India was an underdog in ODIs. Made India believe that we can win and are not ODI minnows.

His ability as a top all-rounder in World cricket and as the first proper pacer from India add to this.

Sadly, regressed a lot in his last few years and looked like a shadow of his former self.

4. Tendulkar .. The most complete batsman I have ever seen playing the game of cricket. To stay at the top and performing day in and day out for 24 years in any international sport is an amazing feat.

Captured the imagination of the entire nation as a teenage prodigy as no other player ever has from India.  In the 1990s, most people watched cricket to watch Tendulkar bat.

5. Kohli .. As test captain, he had the vision to build a formidable pace attack who could win test series / test matches regularly away from home. Dreamed of having four accurate 140 k+ pacers and realized this dream with Bumrah, Shami, Ishant/ Siraj, Umesh in the 2017 to 2021 period.

His contributions as a master chaser in LOIs till 2018 and as a solid test batsman are in addition to the above.

6. Ashwin / Kumble / Jadeja .. They made sure that India have been near unbeatable in home test series for more than 30 years. We often take this aspect for granted.

But this is an amazing feat.

7. Shami .. A very under-rated partner of the more celebrated Bumrah. Pacers hunt in pairs and he formed this pair. Often outshone Bumrah like WC 23 and WC 19.

India, for the first time, had a high quality genuine fast bowling pair in Bumrah and Shami who terrorized batters all over the World.

8.  Gavaskar .. Redefined opening batting in test matches. Probably the most difficult task in cricket along with fast bowling, he did this successfully for 16 years

His ability to play out the fearsome WI quicks of the 70s and 80s without wearing a helmet, and score centuries too, had elevated him to a different level. Plus he could play spin with equal aplomb.

He won the WSC 85 as captain too.

Would have rated him higher but for the fact that he had often been criticized of not going for Team wins till 1984.

9. Rohit ..

Managed to win us the T20 WC 24 as captain. After a long wait of 13 years in WCs.

His recent batting approach of trying to give a flying start is a good direction for Team India in LOIs.

And his ability to hit genuine quicks for big sixes is a treat to watch.

10. Pant / Gambhir ..

These 2 batters always play to win. And have nerves of steel in big matches. Pant in our twin test series wins IN Australia and in tests in England and Gambhir in both the World Cup Finals he played, played match winning knocks and won us these prestigious series / tournaments.

11. Ganguly ..

As captain, he started this aggressive Indian team movement. Till then, Indian cricket teams were these bunch of good boys who never gave it back to the opposition.

His stylish left handed batsmanship add to this. Would probably have won a WC if he had the innumerable T20 WCs in his captaining days. But had to face the most vicious ODI team in history in the final of the only WC he captained in.

12. Sehwag / Yuvraj ..

Two of the greatest entertainers among Indian batters. The 2000s decades was all about watching these two amazing strokeplayers.

And Sehwag was the destroyer in chief of our arch rivals, Pakistan, and won many a big match.

Rohit?

1. Kapil

2. Gavaskar

3. Tendulkar

4. Dhoni

5. Kohli

6. Bumrah - India's first truly great pacer. His legacy would be kids trying to become pacers instead of batsmen.

7. Ganguly - Not as a player but as a captain. Similar to Ranatunga for SL.

Top 5 Cricketers in terms of Impact to Indian cricket not in any order:

Kapil - Gave India the belief that we can compete and win World Tournaments. Great leader and an excellent player.

Gavaskar - Arguably best opening Test batter of all times who gave Indian team the stability with the bat which was lacking. Showed that Indian batters can be counted among the best in the world and inspired a whole generation of batters who followed including Sachin.

Sachin - Revolutionised the way Indian batters approached the game, inspired an entire generation of batters and arguably the greatest Indian batter of all time.

Ganguly - Took over the captaincy at a very difficult time for cricket as a sport. Turned Indian cricket into a team who could win overseas and compete with any team anywhere.

Dhoni/Virat - I am grouping both of them together as both were crucial in shaping what Indian cricket is today. MS is the best white ball captain India has ever had. Took the team to 3 ICC title victory and is arguably the best Wicket Keeper batter India have ever produced. Virat also being one of the best Indian bats revolutionised Indian Test team and made us believe that we can win consistently overseas and gave confidence to our pace bowlers to achieve greatness over the past decade.

All the others don't come close to the above 6. Bumrah might break into it in the future but he has a long way to go. Just being the best or GOAT alone does not qualify you to make the best cricketers list. Players who left a legacy and turned a new chapter for the sport in the country needs to be considered. Rahul Dravid comes close to making the list as a great player as well as how he has shaped the future generation of players as a coach of U19 & A teams.

Kapil > dada

I don't disagree on that. I said even if we're to consider only the on field prowess I wouldn't agree with Kapil being top of that list, not that he's still inferior to Ganguly. Purely on the metrics of on field prowess Kapil is better than Ganguly. If we're to consider the turmoil under which the Indian cricket was in during the fixing scandal what Ganguly did to Indian cricket was more than what Kapil did. I don't even wanna indulge in how Kapil hated Indian pacers with a bit of spice during his time since I don't know much about it.

Maybe someone who lived long enough to witness both events would know better?

Most of us here wouldn't have witnessed the impact of 83 world Cup so I guess we'll either over estimate or under estimate it's impact.

Great list but just a few opinions:

1. Gavaskar should be higher. Ahead of Shami and those spinners atleast because the spinners contribution limits to Tests on pitches convenient for spin bowling. Gavaskar did it across the world and in tough conditions vs high class bowling. Being the first great batsman to come from India and arguably the greatest test opener in last 75 years counts a lot.

2. Viru was a great test batter and should be above Rohit, Gambhir and Pant. Yuvi also because he won two World Cups throughout rather than individual performance of Gambhir in Finals and was overall a better batter.

3.Pant/Gambhir should be bottom among the names mentioned. Additionally, Rahul Dravid deserves a mention because he was so vital in India's success away, still till date the best away conditions batsman for India.
