Rohit Sharma admits blunder in reading pitch after India's ugly batting collapse vs NZ: 'Clearly, it was a misjudgment

Rohit Sharma didn't shy away from acknowledging his mistake as he spoke about the decision to bat first during the opening Test against New Zealand.

Team India endured one of its worst days in Test cricket in recent memory, as the side was bowled out for just 46 on Day 2 of the opening Test in Bengaluru. After rains washed out the entire first day of the Test, Indian captain Rohit Sharma opted to bat – a decision that backfired the side tremendously – as India faced their worst batting collapse in a home Test.

With plenty of help for seamers on the surface, the Kiwi pacers exploited the conditions to optimum effect, unsettling the Indian batters from the word go. Despite Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal playing out the opening 30 minutes, there hardly seemed settled at the crease and Rohit's dismissal marked a flurry of wickets.

Virat Kohli batted at no.3 in the absence of Shubman Gill, while Sarfaraz Khan was promoted to 4, but both departed without troubling the scorers. Only Jaiswal (13) and Rishabh Pant (20) managed to breach double figures in a sorry-looking scorecard, as Matt Henry (5/15) and William ORourke (4/22) wreaked havoc on the batting lineup.

In the press conference following the day's play, Rohit acknowledged that he made a mistake in reading the pitch. India decided to take the field with only two spinners, while New Zealand didn't introduce any during India's first innings.

“We felt there wasn't grass on the pitch, we thought it would do whatever it would do in the first couple of sessions. And it will turn as the game goes on. Whenever we play in India, the first session is critical, and then spinners come into play. The reason to bring Kuldeep was he has taken wickets on flat pitches. So, we expected the pitch to be flatter than it was. Clearly, it was a misjudgment of the pitch, I didn't read the pitch well enough. And we are in this situation today,” said Rohit.

Can't execute plans

Rohit stressed that the Indian batters had a bad day on the field, stating that it was difficult to “execute” the plans.

“You can say that. We got all out for 46. There was help for seamers, and you need to make game plans for that. We have been successful on such wickets, all batters had some plan. But sometimes, you can't execute what you're planning. We had a bad day. But we have been a part of such matches. It's a challenge, and you got to challenge yourself,” said the Indian captain further.

Not bad, its okay to have bad days. I like that he has taken onus on himself. He needs to be more active in the field.

Let us see how they fight it out in second innings.

What's concerning is batters didnt even put any resistance to their wicket.

Except Rohit and to some extent Kohli every other batter just gifted their wicket.

Atleast spend the session, stay on the crease. See how long you can hold your fort.

Ball was dancing around like a snake, yet every was fishing wide deliveries without even reaching to the ball properly.

Rohit also came down the track and had an expansive drive

I did not watch the match, you are right, look at steven Smith, he puts a price on his wicket in every condition.

Indian batsmen even during Fab four era never had the fortitude to fight adversity. These guys simply don't have the ability to fight in tough conditions.

What I want to know did the wicket change so much that their fast bowlers took all ten wickets and Indian fast bowlers did not take even a single wikcet.

Samething happened in ICC test finals against NZ.Fast bowlers were unable to take even single wicket in 4th innings.

Yes batsmen flopped but fast bowlers should be taking few wickets.

Wickets were due to batsmen too. Today conditions did change after sun came out. Also pressure of 46 runs made them desperate.

No one denied it was batsmen fault for getting allout for 46.They did not change that much in 4th innings in lords in 2021.

Indian bowlers led by great Bumrah never had ability to fight to lift batsman after their failures either.

Let us see what they can do tomorrow.

I agree, but I can give him pass as the delivery moved in massively after pitching. And after seeing Rohit for so many years, I am aware that he was never gonna survive that.

2-3 catches were dropped.
Secondly sun came out the minute NZ came to bat, it was frustating to see but that's the reality. Pitch lost lot of venom post lunch when rollers were used on.
Anyway a paltry score of 46 was never gonna sufficie. Also, we're only playing with 2 pacers and one of them is Siraj.

No bowling attack can defend such low scores. Bowlers have done well with modest scores (made largely by lower order contribution).

Batsmen get bowled out for 40 and yeah let's blame Bumrah and bowlers :hysterical:

We've seen the same argument from that deluded Kohli fanboy to explain Kohli's lack of impact and failing to make a difference.

The way he played in England 2021 he would have had a better chance. But is in 'selfless' mode now.

Rohit's done along with Kohli. The difference between them is that Rohit can slog a few before he gets out while Kohli can't even do that. Both don't deserve a spot in the the team.

He should also admit that shot selection of our batsmen was poor.

Our batting line up is very collapse prone with walking wickets batting at key positions.

NZ is Bumrah's bogey team. WTC F, WC 2019 and 23 SFs, 2020 tour etc.

Siraj well....

What can spinners do on day 1, that too when pitch was under covers for a week before the toss. Also moisture had dried out by the time we bowled.  And no scorecard pressure, you post the lowest ever total in Asia and have the nerve to question bowlers, come on now.

String of sub 100 scores by this team is reaching legendary status now.

36, 46, couple of 70s in England.......Lord's 2018 where we scored 100, 130 while Woakes scored an unbeaten 140.

Why/how is this happening? Even Pak which is worse than us had one 48 all out against peak Steyn, they somehow manage to cross 100 even when at their lowest.

No one asked them to get them out for under 46. But they needed to do more. Not just here but in many other matches this was the case.

No one is asking to defend that score, but they can atleast put up a fight.

Lower order runs scored are runs which count for Indian team only, they are not scoring for other team.

SA defended 212 and 270 in 2018. Our genius bowlers could not pick up few wickets when they were defending same type of scores in 4th innings in SA in 2021 and promptly lost the series there and against lost the series in England.

SA got bowled out for 96 in first innings but they turned around and bowled Aussies out for 47 in their second innings.

Nepo gadha Jay Shah has given Rohit and Harmanpreet free run when it comes to captaincy. One is 37, other is 35, no succession planning in sight.

Bumrah, SKY, Pandya came together to conjure a miracle in Barbados, Rohit's only trophy is absolute fluke....he even overbowled the spinners there when Klaasen was in God mode. Less we talk about Kaur, the better.

Who is BCCI secretary to make them captains for life?
