It will be even more interesting to see how did the chessboard look like, did it have lots of colour and art, did the king and queen looked like actual kings and queen from that era. Must be surely different from the minimalistic European black and white design. Chess in its closest form to today originated in Gupta empire. I can answer your questions but will need to do some digging. Have explored these questions some 10-12 years back, very enlightening topic.

Blitz is a simple question, where game is against the clock instead of opponent. Question asked is what is 1+1? In a hurry to answer one side says 3, other says 4, 3 wins because closer to the truth. In reality both nonsense, unfit to be discussed. Rapid I can still understand having its merits. Blitz is an assault on human intelligence. Bullet is a crime against humanity. Btw Iran has many strong GMs, and women players. But most are emigrating to Europe, NA to escape the mullah regime. I'm not pro Russia type person but I do have some affinity for Soviet culture in general. Lots of great physics books have come from there, and the chess talent is well known. Besides brains, Russians have no shortage of brawns. Superhuman strength these guys possess. Gollum 1

Bullet I understand is violence against your mind. Blitz is more like HIIT, it may give a different kind of satisfaction, but maybe not the same as that of marathon which is probably like classical chess.

Who liberated whom? Where are women doing better? I remember watching a documentary from 1990 when the Soviet Union collapsed, that's when I saw the most obnoxious side of 'murica. They subjected Russians to capitalist shock therapy which harmed their economy more. The vitriol towards communists was nonsensical. Russians cannot match American art, entertainment, business intellect, but they are not as entitled as them albeit they may come across as too cold and serious. Edited December 13, 2024 by MechEng

The Hound Posted December 14, 2024 Posted December 14, 2024 (edited) Speaking of Russian athletes, they're probably the most gifted combat athletes in the world. They got many fighters who can be considered in GOAT mixed martial artists category... Fedor Emelianenko is the most influential MMA star OAT. Khabib retired as a champion with a perfect 29-0 record. Islam Makhachev is still active with a 26-1 record and two of Khabib's cousins have also made inroads. Edited December 14, 2024 by The Hound Gollum 1
MechEng Posted December 14, 2024 Posted December 14, 2024 @Gollum one thing I like about chess is that it doesn't have Pakistan and Bangladesh in it. The game is clean and without any political noise. Gollum and New guy 2

Gukesh is nearing 2800.the biggest single blunder in chess history maybe after G6 which Anand played against Carlsen in 2013.. even i couldn't believe Anand would do that blunder.. anyways i m overjoyed. As a popular saying goes, the winner is one who makes the next to last mistake. neel roy 1

The only difference between Anand and Gukesh was, Gukesh paused for few seconds.. wasnt on auto pilot.. for some reason Anand had all the time in the world but instantly made the blunder.. he could have paused for a sfew seconds and he might have won the yes 2014 WC Gollum 1

Very painful one. Took some 10-11 seconds to rush to that move Anyway he was too old by then, and was up against peak Carlsen, aura also matters. Ding doesn't come close to the 2012-14 version of Carlsen, nor even the weakest version of post 2009 Nanjing MC. Edited December 14, 2024 by Gollum neel roy 1

Also early days of movies, Soviets were very prominent. Edited December 14, 2024 by deathmonger Gollum 1
