@Gollum one thing I like about chess is that it doesn't have Pakistan and Bangladesh in it. The game is clean and without any political noise.

Pak and B'desh in chess would be like having a quadriplegic in swimming or athletics. You need brain to play chess and no "qudrat ka nizam" can save your @$$

It's peaceful too, no unnecessary chatter or religious virtue signaling.

India Pakistan cricket "rivalry" is purely political and it was hardly about cricket. This is what I like about chess, where the focus is on the game only.

Russians were very good till 50s-60s. Kruschev/Brezhnev eras they lost steam.

First in the space race. Also early days of movies, Soviets were very prominent.

USSR was good. Russia has always been pathetic and gone backwards every day as a nation, they are more focused on attacking other countries than looking after their own development since inception.

Russia and Putin's agenda is to again become USSR. They don't have any time for trivialities such as chess or space program.

Man the way USSR and USA competed during Cold War. Even aside from military/geopolitical moves starting from recruiting defeated Nazis to bolster their science tech, military.....

Space Race, with USSR being first to send man/woman/dog to space, then comeback by Apollo 11, IMO the greatest human achievement of all time.

Bobby Fischer's run in 60s culminating with him breaking Soviet stranglehold on chess, 1972 vs Spassky. Would take 20 -30 more years before another challenge was mounted on Soviet chess, by an Indian !!!!

USSR striking back 2 months after chess humiliation by beating US men's basketball team in Munich Olympics gold medal match by 1 point, first time US ever lost in that discipline.

1980 Miracle on Ice, Winter Olympics, ice hockey final, where US beat USSR.

Even in Olympics, these two countries would exchange blows every single time, with Soviets having upper hand in both summer and winter Olympics. Sure doping was rampant, but both countries were guilty.

Greatest rivalry ever.

So, Gukesh said he is a fan of Djokovic. But wore Roger Federer shirt in game 14. Kalesh between Nole and Fed fans internationally. Everyone wants to claim him now. This is soft power, this is the reach a global game like chess has.

I just hope India wakes up, smells the coffee and makes chess, hockey, cricket, badminton etc. Indian sports like kabaddi. Money better spent than chasing delusional dream of FIFA WC qualification. Rather be absolute best and owners of some sports than 10th best Asian team in a sport we do not understand, even if that sport is world's most popular one.

Am very sick of this " good boy " image of elite Indian sportsmen. They might be doing it for commercial reasons and to attract the best sponsors.

But it is OTT to be honest even with Gukesh.  I dont like the OTT humility, modesty and perfect mannerisms.

FFS, he is an 18 year old.

The greatest of champions - look at any major sport have rarely ever been " good " guys.   I still believe Kasparov is the GOAT in Chess, but he had an entire system behind him. Magnus has unbelievable god gifted talent - but he is an arrogant narcissist, who rarely ever has anything good to say about his opponents.

Trash talk, psychological games and all of this brings character and excitement. Being a "gentleman " always is boring and feels pusillanimous.

Agree to disagree.

I expect our top sportpersons to be good role models for kids. Even overseas, for every Kasparov or Jordan, you have Messi, Federer, Nole, Bolt. Kohli is a bad boy, Sachin was a good boy...I prefer the latter.

Demis is a great man, probably the greatest thinker of this century.

Interesting to see Musk types also acknowledge the feat. @Lone Wolf, they may hate us but can't ignore. Have seen interesting reactions from many westoids and CCP dickriders.

Yeah, they are just taking the country backwards by trying that, this is not 1930s, same tactics don't work, soft power in the king

Russia had a lot of advantage as they controlled social media and online presence with their bot armies and strategy but instead of using it for pro russia thing, they have used it to attack the west and weaken them instead.

In the process they forgot that there should be a positive image created about them too and it has backfired on them big time.

I hope Putin kicks the bucket soon coz after Ukraine he's gonna come for Europe knowing that NATO is all talk. They haven't done anything despite Putin taking over multiple Baltic/Eastern Bloc nations like Georgia. US and other NATO nations will make excuses when Putin advances to Poland or Finland. Better that Putin somehow falls through a window pretty soon else the WW3 is upon us.

Lets rename the forum to Indian chess fans, I would rather follow the likes of Gukesh, Arjun and Pragg than our over paid over rated cricketers

Earlier govts used to announce award money for sportspersons who did us proud. Now Tai is taking a cut lol

It seems they even robbed the Olympic medalists dry. Then they make hollow promises about making India a sporting powerhouse. We are a country of 1.5 billion who get barely 5-6 good sports related news per year.

Meanwhile BCCI registered as charitable organization, so they don't have to pay income tax on IPL earnings.

This entire country, system is a scam, no matter who is in power.
