Is wasting one more important Test worth it for farewell match?

Reports indicate that Rohit Sharma is likely to retire at the end of the Sydney Test. But is it worth playing him there with the way he is batting? He cannot even get bat on ball. Forget about 50s and 100s, he is not even able to get to double digits. 

 

He has 31 runs in this series. Nathan Lyon has scored double those runs, Starc has scored 3 times those runs and Pat Cummins has scored almost 5 times those runs. Bumrah has taken one less wicket (30) than the number of runs scored by Sharma. To top it, he has now lost 5 out of the last 6 Tests as captain (3 at home against a very weak opponent) and almost lost the 6th, but got saved due to rains. In the same time, Bumrah captained the team in one Test in the most difficult conditions for Indian players in Perth and won.

 

Is a crucial series like BGT worth losing to ensure that a very average Test batsman gets a farewell match? He has no past history of getting runs in Australia also even in his prime, so how is he expected to make any runs? If his captaincy is also not helping the team, then why should be play?

I don't remember any of the senior players of the last gen getting farewell games either.. Sachin was the only one who got a farewell and deservedly so.

Social media was going to bash him even more then. He is captain, so, it would be called running away from responsibility. By retiring after the series, the criticism will be lower.

After that, it seems to have become a trend. Even Yuvraj Singh got an entire T20 World Cup as farewell when he was way past it. MSD got 2019 World Cup disaster as farewell and now Rohit will get BGT loss after 10 years as farewell.

Best way is to niggle Rohit out, have Bumrah captain at SCG and have announce retirement from all formats of International cricket after CT

Running away? What good is he doing for the team as a contributor or as a captain??

 

He made the most selfish decision seen in many many years by taking the opener slot from KL, who was actually playing pretty well as an opener. For all the issues we have had with KL in the past, in this series, he has actually applied himself, focussed on every ball and helped play out the new ball. And what does Rohit do? He puts himself back as opener so he can bat at a familiar position and compromises on team cause.

True, but those are instances of players getting long rope (unnecessarily and incorrectly). 

 

Sachin's was the only instance where a game was planned to be his last game at his home ground, have a ceremony after that with open-mike speeches etc.

Depending on how you retire. If he says "I am more harmful to team than helpful" People will understand. lol I am 100% sure majority of INdian fans other than PR bots will be happy if he quits right now.

Yes but those were washed up players at those times that were allowed to play an additional important series so they can go on their own terms.

That's right. Rohit doesn't even deserve it as he has always been a very average Test batsman. I wouldn't mind having an ODI bilateral series against Bangladesh/Zimbabwe to be a farewell for Rohit.

Yuvraj played CT 17 too and was made scapegoat after it. Retired much later.

 

Dhoni sucked for 3 years atleast upto 2019 WC. If not for Covid he'd not have retired then.
