No. He was THE next best thing not too long ago. A spin basher and a  very good hitter. He has worked on his nemesis,the short balls. He should be a regular in ODI's.  Miles ahead of chokli,KL and Sharma atm.

Is iyer competing with/should be competing Jaiswal for a place in the team tho? You don't need a xi of world beaters. He has little competition in that middle order if it is not for the likes of KL and Kohli or a Rinku who has not had many chances in odis yet. Not the worst option in that case.

if he was better batter against  short ball, he would have been the captain in either t20is or odis.

Inability to play short ball meant he will not be able to retain his place in t20is and will aways be suspect/uncertain fr sena tours.

 

kolhi, shikhar all worked and fixed issue with short ball, nt sure why is he not interested.

Agree, Iyer isn't that good. But despite his limitations, he has already won us important games and series in the last 3-4 years ('21 NZ home series, Mirpur test, WC, especially the SF against NZ), something Gill and Kela haven't been able to do, am not even going to talk about recent returns of oldies. 

 

I hate trundler culture but even there over the years, we have had some clutch skilful trundlers like Irfan Pathan and Venkatesh Prasad, heck even Zaheer Khan post 2007 trundled his way to some memorable spells. Munaf Patel was underrated in our 2011 WC campaign. Think of Iyer like that.

Seems Rohit snapped at a reporter in yesterday's PC when questioned about his lack of runs. Pretty sure that brave journalist will now be blacklisted by BCCI. This is how things are done in India (not just BCCI, look at political scene). Absolute lack of accountability. Media is a caged parrot.

Jaiswal debuted atleast 1.5 year late. Don't overrate  Iyer on an innings chasing paltry 250. Ugly batter to watch, He isnt indispensable. Jaiswal is future. 23 year old Lefty opener who has already proved his metal in other 2 formats. Iyer is 30 year old overconfident prick who failed when it mattered, cant play short balls, don't play other 2 formats. He will be replaced soon by young batter irrespective of Kohli-Rohit plays/retires. Kohli obviously can't be dropped in ICC tournament when he is MOS of last ICC tournament. If Jaiswal performs and Gill keeps scoring at 3 will definitely put pressure on Fatty sharma. Kohli isn't going anywhere from this format.

Iyer had a andhi chukki innings in the CWC SFs,I would definitely take those andhi chukkis in KOs with both hands

I don't like him one bit,he has massive massive weakness can be taken out at will by opposition ,more so now in high pressure games

The issue is, it's not between iyer and oldies or even him and gill, Rahul. 

 

It's always between iyer and youngsters like jaiswal and abhishek, as you can see, jaiswal was dropped after one game.

For all the criticism Iyer is getting in here he is not half as bad. The biggest weakness Iyer had was facing the short pitched bowling but he seems to have worked on it. England tried to bounce him out and Iyer played some good pull/hook shots this series. These may be flat wickets but England bowlers are pacy. Also Iyer mostly scores fast, infact of all Indian players who have at least scored 2000 ODI runs he has the second highest SR. Sehwag is at the top with 104 and Iyer is second at 102, Gill comes in 3rd with a SR of 101 as well. So there is no reason to push him out of the ODI team just because we don't like him. There were players like Steve Waugh who looked ugly at the crease but did the job for the team, that's what matters.

 

FYI I am not comparing Steve Waugh the player with Shreyas iyer, want to clear that up before people crucify me on the forum.

So now tell me this, Gambhir was able to get his KKR mates in the squad, but somehow missed Jaiswal. This is despite us already having 4 spinners? 

I am quite sure this team has been selected by Mr Gambhir, no doubt about it.
