Legend Piyush Chawla retires from all cricket

Former India leg spinner Piyush Chawla has officially retired from all cricket, bringing down the curtains on a 20-year professional career in which he represented India in 35 games.

 

Announcing the decision on his Instagram page, the 36-year-old wrote: "After more than two decades on the field, the time has come to bid adieu to the beautiful game. Today is a deeply emotional day for me as I officially announce my retirement from all forms of international and domestic cricket.

 

"Though I step away from the crease, cricket will always live within me. I now look forward to embarking on a new journey, carrying with me the spirt and lessons of this beautiful game."

 

Chawla made his first class debut as a 16-year-old in October 2005 and made rapid progress up through the ranks. By March of the following year, he'd won a Test cap when picked to play in Mohali against England, becoming the second-youngest man after Sachin Tendulkar to don the India whites. By then Chawla had already made waves on the domestic circuit, picking 35 wickets in his maiden first class season.

 

Although Chawla didn't have a particularly prolific run at the international level, he featured for India in all three formats (3 Tests, 25 ODIs, 7 T20Is) and was a member of the World Cup winning squads of 2007 (T20) and 2011 (ODI).

 

At the time of retirement, Chawla had 192 wickets from as many IPL games, tied with Sunil Narine for third spot in the list of the league's most prolific wicket takers. He represented Kings XI Punjab, Kolkata Knight Riders, Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians, winning the 2014 title with KKR. He last played in the 2024 season.

His worst was the Kitply Cup final against poyyyzz in 2008. One of the worst displays of spin bowling I have seen at that level.

He started with a bang. Lone warrior in the 2006 U-19 final, where we couldn't chase down 100 odd. Then that famous googly bowled of Sachin.

 

Ashwin, Jadeja were late bloomers comparatively, especially the former. But achieved legendary peaks. Not all prodigy/wunderkind stories end the way they are hyped in the beginning.

It's disappointing that neither Mishra nor Chawla made more of a mark for us, especially in tests. Chawla had huge backing from spin quartet around mid-2000s. Both still achieved quite a bit though and had respectable careers.

My earliest memory of Chawla is reading about Chawla taking wicket of Sachin in Domestics.

Newspapers,media hyped him as India's Shane Warne. It was 2006-07.

Also good memory related him is taking 2 catches of last 2 wickets (Hopes and someone else) in 2nd of best of 3 final of CB series-2008. He is decent addition to Hindi Commentary.

He never could turn the ball, the same disease which affects all Indian leg spinners. Spinning the ball means woking hard.Most Indian leg spinners have googly and nothing else.

 

Kumble was more a medium pacer who depended on up and down bounce rather than spin.
