Jaiswal wont be atg

To a true ind fan, it should not matter if Jaiswal turns out to be a ATG or not.  What matters is whether he bats responsibly & sensibly (with match awareness) as an opener.  And the answer (till now) is a BIG NO.   While chasing 190 in a test match, with more than 100 overs left, no opener (with a functioning brain) would try to wildly slog a 145 kmph head high bouncer in 1st over from a 6 foot 5 pacer.  Certainly NOT when your team' score is NIL.

He needs to respect the bowlers and Conditions sometime ,you can't just arrive at the crease and start hitting ,sometimes you need to swallow your ego and adapt to the conditions even at the cost of changing your style of batting

Have to be patient with youngsters, they aren't finished products yet. Be it Washi, Reddy or Jaiswal...they are all early 20s guys.

I won't be surprised if Jaiswal will have a career average like Graeme Smith at end of his career. Not every opener can be Gavaskar or Hayden.

IMO G. Smith was better than Hayden despite the stats.

Still, 9000+ runs at 48 average is elite for an opener from RSA, conditions don't get tougher than that. Personally rate him above even Sehwag, most underrated player of his era.

India was his bogey team, so I understand why some Indians may not fully appreciate his greatness.

Smith was best opener of all time and I rate him above Gavaskar.

Gavaskar's edge lies in the fact that he was one of the GOATs against spin, and played for a weak team, so he was always under pressure, not much support either.

Anyway Smith gets lost in conversation about great openers of the modern era. We all talk about Hayden, Sehwag, Cook, Warner but not Smith. If we had WTC in his era, he would have led that RSA team to multiple trophies. One of the finest test captains ever, yet doesn't get credit like Poms do with his peer Strauss.

PS: Langer too is underrated, but not in the same class as Smith.

Smith averaged 41 in SA and 55 away which shows his calibre.

Also under him, from 2006 till his retirement, RSA didn't lose a single away series. Multiple series wins in Aus, Eng, NZ, Pak, and draws in Ind, SL.

Even ATG Aus didn't have such a fantastic away record, they lost in India in 1998, 2001, 2008. In Eng in 2005, 2009.

Zaheer got him out 7 times in tests IIRC. But even apart from that he never kicked on against us, even when he got starts on pattas. Even in ODIs, apart from that 1 century in Eden (where crowd booed Dravid, Chappell), didn't do much.

Smith gets lost purely because he didn't play Ashes.

But never won home series against Australia and England, that's the reason he gets looked down.

Very few ATGs have bashed other teams while having mediocre numbers against India. Smith and Lara are foremost examples. Who else?

Graham Thorpe I think even though he played less matches against India.

Respect to 17 year old Sachin who saved India with a century on last day pitch. He had about 6 slips. He batted for 340 balls or so. These guys should look at bigger picture.

That is true and this is where having Gambhir around might be counterproductive. Apparently yesterday he had a screaming fit at Jaiswal much like he did at Pant after his dismissal in Australia. With most young players that is the opposite of good man management as it bakes in fear of failure and a safety first mindset. Gambhir himself did 2 tours of England as an opener and averaged 12 with a highest of 38 so he is the last person to be raking someone over the coals for their performance here

Joe root who has surpassed Dravid's century tally recently and about to surpass his total run tally in next match has gotten out playing reverse sweeps to Bumrah and Cummins in the past. Great players play poor shots too, especially in this era. People need to be patient with our batsmen, unless Jaiswal does a kohli and gets out in the same manner 8 times in a row, there is no need pile on him after every single failure
