so how did people bowl 100+ overs in test cricket prior to 1960s? Captains did not waste too much time setting fields

Someone should also show him this graphic and point out that more than 70% of test cricket before 1960s were played in Eng/Aus and over rates were good.  Why is it steadily declining ? Maybe people like Stokes are too slow in thinking about the field placements

There's no point in going through history for over rates.. barely a maiden gets bowled these days and add players burn out etc

His fundamental point of having same over rate across asia & others is very relevant. How can you compensate for 60 overs of spin from the likes of Jadeja or mehidy hasan etc in asia vs fast bowlers in non asia

Pommies were first to whine about over rates during 70s and 80s when WI bombarding teams with four fast bowlers.WI even with their low over rates were beating and wrapping many tests under four days.

 

They were first ones to whine about too many bouncers or first ones to whine about spinning pitches or first ones to whine about flat pitches. The list is endless.When they do it it is okay but when other teams do it it is wrong.

 

England use over rates as weapon slowing things down when other teams are going well otherwise he has point .

 

 

 Light is not problem in England so that should help with 90 overs.Other teams playing in these conditions are not whining.

This crook delayed his team's 1st innings for his selfish 100 (they would have won if they had declared late day 3). But didn't have the heart to see Jadeja/Washi score 100s after their spectacular matchsaving resistance. 

 

He was, is, and will always be a do takke ka insaan. Jadeja will forever be his master, don't let the Pommie media make you believe otherwise. Stokes can't score a 20 to save a match on day 5 outiside his home country, we saw how easily he gave up every time in Ind/Pak last year.

That's why I don't need believe that bowlers ever bowled spells at 140 in Bradman era. They would have mostly been 70 mph bowlers at best.

 

Earlier it was common to bowl 120 overs in a day. Not only over rates were better, but games were longer in Aus and Eng.

 

Then as the game spread they changed it to 90 overs in a day.

 

However WI pacers were famous for slow over rates, they were allowed to take enough breaks in their bowling overs.
