What Has Being a ‘True Friend’ to Trump Gotten Modi? Not Much, Indians Say.

India’s prime minister has made a big effort to build closer ties using his rapport with the U.S. president, but critics say he is getting little in return.

 

Trump 2.0:

 

1. United States deported planeloads of Indian immigrants in shackles. Images of the deportations caused a political storm at home for an image-conscious Mr. Modi, signaling from the U.S. that he should not expect Indians to be treated more sensitively than any other nationality.

 

2. When India took military action against Pakistan President Trump, who had in the past penalized Pakistan for being a “safe haven for terrorists,” essentially treated both countries as equals. When they agreed to a cease-fire, Mr. Trump went on to repeatedly claim that he had forced the deal on New Delhi, much to the embarrassment of Mr. Modi. As the Indian leader tried to control the damage at home, Mr. Trump added salt to the wound by inviting Pakistan’s powerful army chief to lunch, a departure from established protocol.

 

3.  A large number of positions dealing with Indian issues, including the post of the U.S. ambassador to New Delhi, are still vacant six months into the administration’s tenure.

 

4. Now, 25 % Tariffs on Indian goods plus a penalty for Russian oil purchase.

Note: India’s exports to the United States have been growing rapidly, making the U.S. its largest trading partner. Trade in goods alone between the countries is estimated to be about $130 billion, with pharmaceuticals and electronics — including Apple’s new iPhones — among India’s major exports.

 

Conclusion: "India’s primary challenge is that, for the first time in 35 years, it is faced with an American administration that is not driven by strategic altruism, "said Dr. Aparna Pande, the director of the India Initiative at Hudson Institute.

Trump is your typical crony capitalist to the point that even Elon Musk has distanced himself from him.

 

India should not agree on any trade deal with the US especially on farm/dairy products and defence. But then we will be needing to take some serious hits in short term to decouple from the US in the long term. 

 

Since most of goods sold to the US are bought by Indians themselves, what US NRIs can do is that they can try to relocate to a different country which is relatively friendlier to India - thereby allowing us to establish a stronghold on the Indian consumer market there, then US market would be irrelevant due to less Indians. Wishful thinking, but this seems like a solution.

CANADA - Easily the worst place for Indians or any subcontinent people right now. Online anti-Indian racism is at an all time high due to racist whites in Canada.

 

AUSTRALIA - Most Racist country on the planet. Yet Indians migrate like brain dead morons to this countries. Indian Australian kids will grow with self hatred, inferiority complex and will hate their own culture and identity.

Why should Apple open its assembly/manufacturing plant in India when Vietnam has only 20 percent tariffs add to the fact that Vietnam has so many Chinese companies inside their country?

Can't stress enough how online hatred has transferred into real time experiences for Indians especially in Ireland and Caneda.

 

NRIs will bear the brunt in coming years in other parts of the world.

US is indeed lesser affected but it will be most brutal in coming years if things don't change.

We are cooked.

 

 

Vietnam may not have the scalability of India due smaller labour presence, but then I'm not sure if India manufactures iPhone in massive bulk. If the count is not large then Vietnam will easily make up and be the right alternative if India does not bow down to US demands.

 

We are paying the karma now for promoting crony capitalism which started with demonetisation in 2016. Not to forget that we went from agrarian society to service based directly and skipped the manufacturing phase.

 

Services are all about soft skills, and going by India's command in English language we had a better presence in Anglo markets than China. But we weren't prepared for the possibility of rise in anti India racism and innovations in AI which would hit our services severely. Secondly, if we had strong global presence in exporting goods manufactured in India, our gdp would have still been steady if relations went sour with English speaking countries.

Maybe move to South East Asia or any other non English speaking economies that have very high demand for high skilled labour. Adjusting there will be difficult for NRIs who are used to comforts of developed countries , but yes - people will treat with more respect as long as you respect their culture and law.

Running away from one place to another isnt the solution. People who are now US Citizen need to take ground and push back any hatred.

 

Indian community is one of the richest in US, hence jealousy is pretty common. What is needed now to make political inroads...maybe even consolidate the population is a state or two and become formidable factor for the elections. We are missing the same in Canada as well where our community are spread thin, while other communities concentrate themselves in a state or two and become a major player.

 

Realize that West and ME are culturally separate from us, they dont have the same values which we have. So, Indians will face resistance every now and then.
