He increases the count of non-bearded players in XI.

There was a time when everyone in XI had started keeping beard across all teams.

Current T20 team - Only Bumrah is following that trend.

I think it was Virat influence if I am not wrong.

Gill is 100 upgrade over guy like Samson.Samson's inability to rotate strike is such a liability.

He played whole series as opener against England what the heck did he do there, it is five matches in a row with no one looking over his head.

Can't compare keeper with specialist bat. Samson did score tons in SA.

So what he scored tons in SA. and he is competing for opening spot. Rahul Dravid has 22 ball fifty in odis but it did not make him an explosive odi batsman.

I have nothing against Samson, but  his lack of strike rotation which is so basic need is huge negative for him.Playing and scoring against second string sides does not mean much.

He was opener in England series, he barely reached double figure in five straight matches.Even in last match he was stuck against Oman.

Openers don't need to rotate strike that often in powerplay. SA was not 2nd string. If anything these teams in Asia Cup are poor.

Gill failed in 2 previous innings too. That too batting at his fav position against poor attacks. Suddenly we need to ignore that?

Samson's competition is Jitesh as keeper bat.  Its not Gill v Samson as we need a keeper too.

Seeing ppl comparing sanju and gill and based on just innings. Not sure how that is justified ??? Sanju and Jitesh are not in Ind team because sanju is  best top order batter and Jitesh is best mo/lower mo batter in Ind they are in 15 because they are wk who had or are seen has having better batting abilities than other wk batter in Ind.

None of ind wk options is any match or anywhere near any other top order options available at this time , but none of those top order batters  has any kind of wk ability???

You need 2 wk in 15 can some1 suggest some names that have been tried and not failed. The thing at this point is how do Ind maximize that particular wk??

One and the only way currently is to make them open and ask them to maximize the pp, that the trade off every team is doing right now. There are better batters than Salt in Eng, there are batter betters in SA than Riklton, there are Even NZ who has som many wk wants there wk to open and Aus has Inglis who they think can take down spin in middle order and they do not have any other t20 wk.

If choice was purely for a batter then Jaiswal would have made more sense  or may be Arya but Ind need to slot in a wk without decreasing the batting strength of the team what options does Ind have ???

Our best T20 team would be...

Abhishek

Jaiswal

Tilak

Iyer (C)

Axar

Pandya (VC)

Dube/Parag/Vipraj (someone who can chip in with 2-3 overs and can hit)

Jitesh (wk)

Kuldeep/Arshdeep (if it's a turning pitch play Kuldeep else go with Arshdeep)

Bumrah

Varun C

Others to keep an eye on:

Openers: Arya, Ayush Mhatre, Suryavanshi with Arya and Mhatre ahead of Suryavanshi

All-rounders: Krunal Pandya, Nitish Reddy, Ramandeep, Rinku, Washington Sundar

Spinners: Sai Kishore

Pacers: Harshit Rana, Mayank Yadav (if he ever gets fit and bowls around 150 kph), Mohsin Khan (if he recovers from his injury)

Middle order: Ashutosh

We're making the team weaker by adding "ODI batter" Gill, "inconsistent" Samson and "I like hitting across the line to fine leg" SKY. If they don't want Iyer captain then make Pandya captain with Iyer as the VC. This also allows Tilak to bat at his best spot - no. 3 where he scored 2 100s against SA. We have more than enough talent to dominate but need to make the right selections. Right now 3 out of 11 selections are not optimal and that'll hurt us against better teams.

Not picking Vipraj was a missed opportunity, but at least he's in the A team to play Australia A

I am not talking about failures.Anyone can get out to low scores. No openers have to be very adapt in rotating strike too.

To some extent batsman at number five should have ability to start hitting from ball one.Samson will look million dollars if ball comes onto bat and he can swing freely thru the line but that won't be the case everytime.

You need a WK so who is better at number five becomes an issue. But Gill as an opener is an upgrade over Samson.

But IMO Samson is not good enough to be an opener in full strength Indian team. So question needs to be asked is Jitesh a better fit at number 5. If answer is yes then he needs to play.

Gill doesn't need to play T20s, he has a greater calling, ie. taking India to test no.1. In this quest to survive on the T20 side as a misfit, he's likely to destroy his batting. India does not need Gill the T20 batsman, hope the powers above and Gill himself realises this. You have a higher purpose. Let Abhishek and Samson open.

Gill is a major concern. He has gone missing in every final he has played. He flopped in 2 WTC finals, went missing in 2023 WC final, wasn't that great in 2025 CT final either where Rohit did the hard running, and today added one more flop show in another high profile final.

Overall he has batted 7 times in finals (4 times across 4 innings in WTC finals, 2 times in ODI finals and once in T20 final) and has failed every single time over the last 3-4 years.

Time to replace Gill with Jaiswal and SKY with Iyer. We need to find players who can handle pressure such as Iyer (he was the difference in 2025 CT), Rinku, Jaiswal etc. instead of softies such as Gill, SKY and Samson.

Gill has totally *ed the balance of the playing XI. Samson as opener was working fine, why change that? And by making him VC, he has become undroppable. More corruption by GG-Agarkar duo.

If they felt Samson needs to be moved down the order, Jaiswal should have been his replacement as opener, not Gill!
