Looking at how things are, I guess democracy was never meant to work in the real world.

Need not get started on India, with so many conflicting voices and a large diaspora of Abrahamic faiths who openly/discretely hate Hindus while still being Indian citizens (@Mariyam, we all love you here, this is not aimed at you). Lack of clear direction/goals and apathetic citizens. Even after almost 80 years of Independence, we're seen as a shithole.

The same can be seen in western countries too, locals are now hating on immigrants including non white naturalized citizens.

China seems to be the only country where theres is some stability. Locals seem content and the country is beautiful. However, China is lucky due to a homogenous population and no threat of cross border terrorism.

I'm not advocating for dictatorship here, just that democracy is a nice concept but cannot be sustained in the real world.

Democracy works provided you have an educated & developed society. Education helps you to understand the policy implications, developed society means you can't be bought off by freebies.

This is the reason why democracy has been successful in the west. West is facing issues now, because it let in a large population of people who aren't very educated & can't participate in a devloped economy.

forgot to add race, & ethinicity, humans have an evolutionary trait to distrust difference. new races & ethenicty in west is also causing strains in democracy.

I would say china is in a ideal position to switch to a domcratic nation. India need to keep voting for for BJP for at least 2 more decades, but also needs to hand it some defeats so they don't become cocky & ignore its ppl.

Democracy by itself never works by itself. It's always majority wins.

The US has always been a melting pot. Before, the Irish, Chinese, Italians, Germans etc. were the foreigners. They have all faced derision and have been put down by the existing populations. What the US is going through is nothing new. It's just that it was never recorded in social media and publicized globally.

The west is no shining beacon of how democracy is supposed to work. They have plenty of skeletons in their closet. It's just that it's all hidden or conveniently forgotten.

@MechEng Not sure if I follow. Those who want to hate their country will do so regardless of the type of government.

What viable alternative do you have to a democratic set up in a nation like India?

Poorer economies, democratic countries, dictatorships, different continents, religions etc.  most are cleaner and less polluted than India....it is the lack of civic sense.

Lack of civic sense is appalling.

For ex.

1. You will see people empty a polythene and then just throw it then n there.

2. Burn garbage.

3. Drive vehicle without pollution checks.

4. Burn parali.

5. Burn crackers.

6. Not form a queue.

7. Protest against removing stray animals.

The list is very big.

In schooling, civic sense should be taught with highest weightage.

Democracy or Dictatorship matters little.

It is the underlying quality of people and the quality of co-operation between them.

If a society does good in Democracy, it will excel in Dictatorship too.

The media has vested interest in democracy, as it can enjoy unfettered freedom in it. They will always hype it up.

Go live in dictatorship and then you will enjoy democracy

Democracy is the worst form of government. Except for all the alternatives.

Capitalism is the worst economic model. Except for all the alternatives.

The problem is not the principle of democracy. It is that people prefer charisma over character, style over substance, power above kindness, and likeability above integrity.

In capitalism man oppresses man, in communism it’s just the other way around.

You could not be more wrong.

For Syria, asad regime (dictatorship) was the best. For Nigeria, where boko haram slaughters innocents, military rule is again the best. For India, democracy is better only till a certain demographic situation. After that it is much worse than military rule. Infact, at that point, democracy will be suicidal.

Before judging a form of Government, Allways factor in that USA has been actively ensuring other form of Governance (Specially Communism) to fail.

Still we got China

I guess I have to agree with @kepler37b here. Type of government is irrelevant if the quality of people is down.

It is rare (and am not sure if it has ever happened) that an authoritarian/dictator type person can also be of "good quality." They typically have zero empathy and are on the extreme end of the narcissism scale

he is talking of Aam jantaa..if aam jantaa sucks, the country will suck under democracy too.

The redeeming factor of dictator is that they are more likely to look beyond next election. The elected politicians simply kick the can down the road.

Every democracy will end up in a financial ruin and ultimately leads to dictatorship. Almost all democracies around the world are fiscally profligate.

Double-edged sword, of course.

And dictators will often become tyrants as well.

There's no stable form of governance which has proven results. People can claim the example of Singapore or uae but the fact is that in the case of Singapore (they are strategically viable place) with a * all 369 square km radius. Managing that country , anyone can do.

Uae has the oil reserves and the money that come with it.

Come with a 1 + billion population and then you'll find much more problems. I know people referring to china but there are internal problems there which aren't reported.
