Have we under-achieved in T20s?

India is definitely best T20 side in history. But our trophy cabinet doesn't reflect that. We are leading three tables. Overall performances. But when it comes to crunch games like semi/final we are at second position alongwith England.

For the longest period we havent had a true t20 team like we have now. We won the last world cup thanks to pitches which suited that squad. Current team is more aligned with game requirements of modern t20. Can this team retain wc ? I dont know however this Indian team should give every one else a run for their money.

Both Australia and SA are scary looking. We are totally banking on Varun C against those 2 sides.

We lack fire power in lower order that helps in taking game away from oppositions..if we fix it.. we look like invincible

Both are good side but have flaws, australian bowling is light for India. SA has over reliance on top order. England and NZ are just as good. SL for me has not played to its potential otherwise they are a decent side.

Indian is an all round team which should beat most team. One big issue we have is that in terms of experience we only have Hardik and Bumrah. Sky is so out of form that its a worry. Hope he bounces back soon.

2014 world cup was there for the taking. We were bamboozled by wide yorkers and Yuvrajs inept batting in the final.

ONe of the comment from that match

Venkat: "I would put this as Dhoni's worst gamble in World cup final yet...You have Yuvraj in the worst possible form and Dhoni himself with very little match practice...Dhoni should have promoted Raina ahead at number 4. T20 is about momentum cricket and the finals are the place where you nail down the game. Congrats Lanka for capitalizing on the insipid India batting. I hope you guys now go out and finish the match"

2009,10,12 wt20 sides were totally inept. 2014 was better side but fumbled it in the end. In 2016, there were other sides simply better than us. 2021,22 again were just bad side.

We have as many trophies as West Indies in t20s and we have been more consistent.

Also, we are number one contenders for this t20 wc.

I think we have done well.

If not for Dhoni’s stupid captaincy screwing India. They should have won one more World Cup in 2014 or 2016.

2022 Rohit’s inept batting and captaincy costed another title.

They have underperformed .

West Indies gone to extremes. They didin't even get qualifed for main round in 2022. Even with crappy bowling unit we made it to semi final. 2014/2016 both had decent teams. But guys like Rahane hurt us.

Dhoni was lucky the Joginder Sharma gamble somehow worked else that was also a loss and a painful one.

These are bilateral records post 2015... Prior to 2015 our T20I numbers have been mediocre as per stats guru

That being said we should have won 2014 T20 WC.

Replace Rohit Rahane and Shikhar with even Robin Utthappa ( most in form Indian T20 player in IPL) and we win the tournament.

We didn't even have Utthapa in 2009,2010,14 WC

He was one who had the genuine T20 game when our T20 cricket was still in its infancy

Dhawan was never a proper investment in this format

Uthappa was a geniune powerplay merchant.   He had all the aerial as well as T20 innovative shots.

His absence always pis*ed me off.

We wasted his peak in search for all format shoopwrstars:whack:

He used to manhandle Lee other pacers ,it was unheard in those days but he was among few who could change the temp in matter of few balls, yes it was very frustrating to see him in sidelines atleast from T20 side

We let our T20 batting revolve only around Kohli after Yuvraj went out of the scene

Different topic but .. More than T20is we have more seriously under achieved in ODIs given the number of world class ODI players we have had in the last 10 years say. Should have won another world cup since 2011

As for T20is ...

Yes and as others have said inability to profile right has cost us.

we had to endure Rahane, Dhawan and an ageing Yuvraj

There is a batch of guys from about 8 to 10 years or so ago who should have played at least few more T20is, may not have been good enough for long careers but deserved a chance or more chances:

Uthappa of course and also Nitish Rana, Shreyas Gopal, K Gowtham, Tewatia, Krunal, probably Rajpoot...SKY made his debut a year at least if not two years too late

Unless we keep the T20 team young, we will keep reaping lackluster results. The fearlessness of youth and daring decision making in clutch moments can lead a team to big wins. We had timid, anchor mindset and overaged players dominating the batting lineup for years.

Yes.. India's dominating run in WOrld cups since 2011 is on par with Australia's World cup run in 2000s. Just that they did not falter in crunch games. But we did.
