BCCI’s options post Pakistan boycott

  1. Get lost revenue compensated by Pak because of their no-show
  2. Continue to not have bi-laterals with Pak or travel to Pak for cricketing events
  3. Ask to not be grouped with Pak in any ICC tournaments
  4. Encourage global boards to not give NOC to their players to play PSL
  5. Not have any common players between IPL and PSL
  6. Create separate playing squads for different formats and play 2 tours in parallel to shift cricketing revenue further to India.
  7. Lastly, and possibly in the longer term, field two T20I teams.

Curious on your last point why should they be allowed to field two different T20I teams.

I don't know if any rule exists to have countries play only one team each? If cricket cannot expand to more countries and maintain the same quality, then one country having multiple teams is probably the way to grow the number of teams, yet maintain quality of the games.

Laying that out as a possible route that international cricket might take in the future.

This attempts to narrow down specifically on actions BCCI could contemplate that would maximise the hurt to Pakistan.

I’m not including reputational risk as PCB has no reputation to speak of.

1. Financial damage - how close can BCCI come to inflicting a loss to the PCB of the $72M at stake (around $34M in annual disbursements by ICC and and $38M revenue loss to broadcasters)

2. Quarantine:

- can BCCI withhold to limit PCB participation in future ICC organised events?

- Can BCCI prevent Pakistan from hosting future ICC events?

- Can BCCI prevent foreign participation in PSL? (Probably would be unwise to try this because you’d be denying employment opportunities to players from other nations)

- Can India refuse to play Pakistan in WC games?

3. Others

- Take that bath:  in financial terms rework all estimates so that valuations reflect a world in which Pakistan plays little or no role.  Pass that on to the broadcasters.

- Ramp up investment in Afghanistan

- What else?

How authentic is the 72M $ figure you quoted as I've seen on other sites that the boycott would result in 250M $ losses to the broadcasters.

Do the India Pak matches generate roughly around the same figures in every tournament including the Asia Cup. I read somewhere during the Asia Cup that the figure is somewhere around 23M $ which seems to be the most reasonable amount.

If it is really 250M $ as the rumours suggest Pak wouldn't settle for a paltry sum of 38M $ as their cut from the ICC revenue pool.

Hope the BCCI had learnt their lesson and stopped all India Pak fixtures from now. Just cut them off like we banned all their players from IPL in 2009 and leave them scrambling for finances to run their cricket.

Without BCCI and the broadcasters extra greed they are as relevant as Bangladesh.

Technically speaking if you have two squads in two countries playing games at different times - say Australia games in the morning and India games in the evening, it is the same team.

ICC’s annual disbursement to Pakistan is an established dataset.  The loss suffered by broadcasters not so much but $38M would take it to around Rs 350 crore which tracks.

Numbers $250M and even $500M have been thrown around but I think these are at a macro level if true. I don’t believe it’s true, just journalists farting around.

Correct, but that was a different point, point 6 in my original post. We could have an ODI squad playing in Australia and a T20 squad playing in India in the same week. That way, there are more match days.

I was also talking about a possible (seemingly extreme) option 7 where we could have countries like India and Australia playing two T20I teams in the same tournament to increase the number of teams instead of playing Italy, Netherlands etc.

Or just name them North India and South India and let them play different countries at the same time. We should do this atleast for T20 matches.

We are already doing this with our A teams but an A team doesn't sound like a main team to the Average fan.

bcci can not do much, they a can file a complaint to icc and bring other boards to consensus.

if they wnt to do something it will be multi-pronged:: bcci filing complaint agst pcb, broadcaster moving an objection, bringing all other boards to consensus that pcb did all this at last moment to create nuisance  , an issue that has nothing to do with them , and icc can not tolerate a board which is trying to use nuisance as policy .

icc can not look soft now as if this goes-by then other boards will do the same thing.

2.  PCB’s options are to seek redressal with ICC’s internal Dispute Resolution Committee, and only after that with the Switzerland based Court For Arbitration of Sport (CAS)

Nothing in the constitution about CAS. CAS jurisdiction seems limited to corruption and Drug cases.

UEFA. spells out what is and what. is not covered by CAS

No India was host of Asia cup, you want India to boycott their own tournament. It is like saying India should boycott world t20 since India has to play Pakistan before this fiasco.

India is not boycotting anything.

There is no value from them issuing statements about an issue which the ICC should properly deal with. Pakistan are refusing to turn up for a game which is part of an ICC tournament. India don't have to do anything right now.

Once Pakistan don't turn up on the 15th and forfeit the game without providing a defensible reason, BCCI should let actions rather than words speak for themselves. These actions should involve complete cessation of all India-Pak contests. Till that happens there is no reason for the BCCI to get involved.

Did BCCI get invloved? I have not seen it. It is just new channels in India who are throwing fits.

Pakistanis are thinking they have brought ICC and BCCI to its knees, what those idiots as usual are not realizing they are digging their own grave just like BCB.

Nothing will happen.

That is the base expectation. Most of the ICC ( including the BCCI) will focus on commercials as they always have done  and find a fudge to keep the India-Pak gravy train going. I think they haven't yet realised the rapidly diminishing attractiveness of these one sided fixtures especially in a calendar saturated with competing products.

Most of the people involved are not exactly firm, principled decision makers and will keep having meetings and let the clock run out. To be honest Pakistan have played a reasonable card by hiding behind a government directive and forcing the issue to come to a head. I would like their bluff to be called but don't see any strong leaders who will make the call that has to be made.

Have to put an end to the shameless rigging of fixtures. Being forced to watch Ind v Pak every tournament has become nauseating. And the matches are not worth anywhere near the ridiculous dollar figures quoted.

Dress/hype it up as much as you want but at the end of the day it's still $hit on a stick.

Does BCCI have the cojones to respond in a meaningful way?

Or is this nepo baby Shah even more contemptible than he appears?

Many of us are sick of the pettiness of BCCI’s behaviour in the last one year.

Consider:

1. Not shaking hands with Pakistan team.

2. Refusing to collect the trophy from PCB chairman

3.  Sacking a player from IPL because he’s the wrong nationality.

No substance.  Cheap, frivolous and ultimately laughter inducing actions.

Why? What were you trying to prove? These are the acts of passive aggressive weaklings.

And now that BCCI has been hit where it hurts the most - in their pockets - I want to see if this administration had the balls  to give a substantial response.

Otherwise it will be clear, to me at least, that BCCI is all talk.  Take your pick - they’re money grubbing pimps or blustering, inept incompetents.

Maybe both.
