Smith may likely retire in next away Ashes or even next year's 150th anniversary one off test vs England in MCG.

Starc or Lyon must be eyeing that game to sign off as well

Don't understand this decision. Finally NZC arranged a packed test season and he walks away, just like that. Could have enhanced his legacy in the 4 test series in Aus. Also a WC next year where NZ has a decent shot. 

 

Anyway great career, but promised more. Around 2016-17 he was set to become an undisputed ATG, but his returns became poorer against top teams like Ind, Aus, RSA, Eng. 

 

Anyway he will always be remembered for playing a great hand in winning NZ the 2021 WTC final. Twin 50s in a pace paradise, excellent returns on a low scoring pitch.

His 100 in the series decider in UAE against poyzzzz in 2018 was an all timer. 

 

NZ was chasing the game when he scored that 100 and helped NZ win the series 2-1.  Then he threw away the cheque in the ceremony, I think he did something similarly disrespectful with the Oye Hoye trophy against those namoonas. Also there was some biscuit trophy for a JAMODI series in Pookland. Good times.

A very good player and one of the best kiwi batters and captain. Probably realized that the game has moved on past him and he cannot contribute at a higher level so decided to retire mid-tour

Excellent career, playing all formats has taken its toll. Root benefitted a lot for playing tests only.England don't play that many odis.

 

But retiring midway thru the tour is ridiculous and selfish. If he had any inkling of doing it, he should have done before, NZ is about to have their busiest season.

Root has played close to 200 ODIs, 7500+ runs, 20 100s. It is T20 format where he hasn't played much, either in internationals or IPL....only see him in 100 and that Vitality Blast.

Don't think any NZ player is going to reach 10k runs now. Even Rachin won't play enough to get to that milestone, already 26 and hasn't reached 2k test runs.

I think Young should play. Was impressive in the India series, also played well in the 3rd test against Poms last year, after they had gone down 0-2...NZ made it 1-2. Young and Santner, both weren't picked in 1st 2 tests, and both played well in the 3rd test.

will anyone from india reach ten thousand in tests? i do not think pant will reach there because of his fitness issues jaiswal is missing out on too many chances and gill is the only one scoring runs

Dunno if you guys remember but that was an epic test series @Lone Wolf @Nikhil_cric. The other test win for NZ came courtesy Azhar Ali who exposed the tail when 10 or so runs were required, bottom 3 of Pooks all made ducks and AA couldn't get those 10 runs despite Pook tailenders standing with him for a good 15 overs. It was 100 times worse than what Jaddu did in Lord's last year. 

 

Lankans ended Pak's unbeaten UAE run in 2017, but IMO it was this NZ series which finished Pak test team for good.
