Why does General Category never protest in India - despite being robbed of merit more than anyone else ?

People argue that reservations are keeping country behind - how do they support this with progress trend of country?

Ever since industrial revolution took place, country where mostly Khastriyas and Brahmins held most of the power kept going back. Lost country to British, had to struggle 200 years to get independence - and that struggle was a mass movement.

It is not true that power was with kstsriyas and Brahmans before the British industrial era. The industrialization only started in the 19th century. After the 10th century, most of India was ruled by Islamic regime and Mogul. Many of the kings that either fought with these regimes or paid Allegence where non-Brahmanss. Most of them were khatris , and that were many kings that are now considered  Dalit . It was not as rigid as in the British era, many kings who were of lower cast.es, called themselves as descendants of Rama and from Ashwaku dynasty and ruled the land. Only exception is Peshwa. Hoover Brahmans. The British took over most kingdoms from Islamic Kings, in the north and east, from Marathas in the rest of the country.

Since 1947-1990, 80% opportunities were open to all and yet country remained most backward in those days. Right now country has prospred a lot.

Not exactly true, many states like in Karnataka, TN had already implemented MAndal  like policies and had given reservations to  OBC  in the 60s  to  70s it itself. Only north india didn’t know about this until MAndal  commission was implemented in the country in the 90s.

If this was single biggest reason holding back country, then India would have been better in 50s-90s and would have been on downward trajectory.

This part I agree with, reservations for ST and for other OBCs  was not responsible for the state of the country in this period. It was the.  Mediocre Babudom  system that the British had left india with, our socialist political class and the general public who were safeguarding  their own  regional interests. Hiring would be based on recommendations,  people they know from the same community/language/religion, etc. not based on any merit. This was one of the reasons why competitive exams were introduced in India.  Most of public sector hiring was based on recommendations./shifarish. Most of 10 millions who who migrated out of TN in the 60s and 70s were hired in public sector companies like HAL, IIT etc., in bangalore based on their linguistic preference..

we were also hampered by the economic policies of Nehruvian political class/license Raj, income tax policies through industries that went up till 97% during IG era. Congress was the bane  in  that era.

Extending on this, which problem are people trying to solve? From the arguments presented here and social media, these look like common feelings. Add more to the list.

1. SC/ST/OBCs are holding back development of country. Incompetent ones are being selected in large numbers and reason for medical negligence, bad infrastructure, poor roads etc.

As explained earlier, especially in public sector, incompetent people are hired because of references/recommendations and personal biases, is responsible for mediocre performance of that sector, not because of reservations. We can totally ignore the Govt sector. It’s totally out of control now it only hiring from Govt mandated quotas .  Upward mobility of meritorious candidates is affected by preference to STs.  If you know the manager/GM, it is easier to get promotion. This is more to do with the working culture of India since the British era.

2. GCs are forced to go to US and Europe because their opportunities are taken up by SC/ST/OBCs. Had they not left due to reservations, India would have been progressing lot faster and would have been much better country. Removing reservations will prevent them from going to US/Europe etc.

This is not true, because most of the GC who get into IITS, good universities like  BITS, IISE, IIMs etc. usually end up going abroad since the 90s. This is to do with the liberalization and availability of private sector jobs outside india easily. They are economically lucrative for people who are looking for better opportunities.

In my personal experience, graduating from a tier one city like Mysore, we had about 37 students graduating in my class, at least 30 of them are outside india. This had nothing to do with reservations.

The reservations  indirectly affect GC getting into good colleges, because they could not make the cut off. They end up in regular or inferior colleges and usually look to go abroad for higher studies.  They prefer to do MS in foreign universities than doing MTech in India. This is more to do with inferior higher education in India, especially post graduation. There is not much funding in both public and private institutions for research, so people end up going abroad. I don’t think GC should blame reservations for this brain drain.

You have raised some good points for the discussion.

3. GCs are worried about that SC/ST/OBCs are not getting fair distribution and select few with reserved are taking up all opportunities.

3. It's a problem of social inequality and feeling of being wronged among GCs which needs to be addressed.

To me indicator to moove on from reservation is : Social acceptance of inter caste marriage and kicking out of untouchabilty from system.  Question is, Should we wait till its eradicated completely from system or shall we start having this discussion knowing fully well that Gen Z or Gen Alpha actually dont have untouchabilty and are okie with inter caste marriage.

On issue of untouchabilty my assessment is absolutely cleared from cities and towns. Relatively Watered down in villages.

Intercaste marriage is tough cookie. Society is still outcasting a family for inter caste marriage, and on this I think we are 2-3 decades away.

Since we can not strikeoff caste based reservation in one go, A discussion needs to begin on alternative  reservation system. May be that dialogue will change the mind of some people to moove to EWS reservation and make it easier for government to switch to EWS based reservation

Some state governments are incentivizing intercaste  marriages, but it is far cry for society to accept it.

I don’t believe that preferring a bride or groom from your community is casteism. It is personal preference as having a common root culture will build greater bond for a lifetime. India still has the lowest divorce rate among most countries. It is hard to imagine a staunch and strict vegetarian family getting related to a family that eats meat. Even in the same caste, there are vegetarian and non-vegetarian communities and they don’t inter mingle. It is even more strict among SCST communities, you’ll find it hard to see.  Valmikis marrying into say a Meena family. This is just personal preference and not casteism. As more and more people naturally get married into other communities, this will no longer be a stigma among communities. As it is, there are more inter– caste Marriages in urban and millennials now. It will be even more among Gen Z also, but it can’t be enforced by the government. It has to be a social change within communities.

But where does food preferences got to do with inter cast marriage for the future generations. Especially now you will have some brahmins who eat meat or are strict vegetarians. YOu will also have OBC/SC families who eat meat or are strict vegetarian. If its dietary preferences then that can be the deciding factor but now families are just saying we will not marry into a lower caste because WE are shudh brahmins and anything else the other family does is conveniently ignored.

Tier 1 im not worried about as in the next 25 years intercaste marriage and discrimination will virtually be non existent. Its the attitudes in Tier 3 and villages wont change as the Gen Alpha will see their families behaving this way and will carry on this mentality and bring it to Tier 1 cities too

Agree. Not marrying different caste is not a issue. Issue is society out casting families because someone did a inter caste marriage. Many Gen z and most Gen  Alpha people wont indulge in outcasting and Gen Millenials will be old and receptive

I’m not talking about a boy and a girl of different caste in  love  and marrying. I’m not opposed to such Intercast.e merry Christmas. I wish more of the next generation intermingle that way.I have not seen anybody seeking to marry a person of a different cast in an arranged marriage. In arrange marriages, they will always look for similar interest/food preferences, etc. and that is how they end up marrying in their own cast. e

As you said, in future generations that stigma will disappear and more into caste marriages happen voluntarily.

That's my point, a food preference can also be similar in another caste eg. pure veg lower caste. So essentially its not about the food preference is it-  its full on discrimination against a lower caste family ( regardless if they are educated or have money or have a good job).

I am a brahmin but for me going forwards I dont believe in castes. for my future children the main thing needs to be; they are Hindu, educated and come with decent moral values. who cares what someones caste or food preference is

We are essentially saying the same thing, but if somebody is seeking alliances within their own caste doesn’t necessarily mean that they are looking down upon other castes as inferior. It’ll be hard to find comfortable without similar lifestyles. But finally enough, if the groom is richer, people don’t mind even marrying it to lower  castes as per their hierarchy.

A Brahmin from UP gets outcasted as soon as he marries a Brahmin from Gujrat. So its not about upper caste vs lower caste only. Issue is inter caste.

But why? thats my question.

What lifestyle is a Hindu brahmin got which is way better or superior to a Khatri or a baniya or a Chamar Hindu who are on the same level economically? As a high caste person its our job to call out this loophole which is being used to discriminate against lower caste during arranged marriage.Once we do this our case becomes much easier when we want to see caste based reservations to end. When there is absolute proof that caste lines are blurring in ALL aspects of life then we will be in a good position to have the higher moral ground. Our aim should be to unite Sanatanis without getting bogged down in caste unnecessarily.

DO expand on this- unless Im not aware of a new lifestyle which has recently been introduced?

First of all, I don’t believe in any hierarchy of castes, no oonch  neech. When I get acquainted or make new friends, I don’t ask their last names, although many have asked my last name just kind of generic  (Kumar)!. but for an extended relationship there should be some compatibility which I called as a lifestyle. It’s about interest, believes, etc. they also believe families have to be compatible so marriages last longer. Although there are outer apps like the Agarwal – Goyal case. I also don’t want to be accused of having a savior complex to promote inter- caste marriages believing to be in a higher position in terms of cast hierarchy, which I don’t believe in.  if it happens organically, it may be it’s all good for future.

could you give some tangible examples?

Some communities like baniyas tend to be more frugal than others. Bhumihars tend to more confident, confronting and more likely to stand up to others. Kayasthas are more into studies and jobs and families carry that mindset.

There are a spectrum of opinions

1. People like me who favor caste reservation but not for creamy layer.

2. people like anand Ranganathan(still not sure about him),chirag Paswan who support reservation in private sector as well

3. People like ajit bharti who oppose caste reservations.

If my future son or daughter find somebody on their own , I would wholeheartedly work on it. There is no option there for me, but if I am seeking an alliance, I would be comfortable looking with similar interest first. Certain people of certain communities have a stereotype associated and we don’t want to fall into such stereotypes, make money, minded people, judgment, people, etc., with hard to explain. Obviously, we will be looking for somebody in the same economic class, looking at it practically. This is not casteism in my opinion, but a preference.

With exceptions of political opinions of politicians, all of the groups would agree that reservations  based on EWS is the way to go for the future. Associating certain cast groups to poor people is what led us to this problem of creamy layer issue. Son of a IAS officer who has already received benefits of cast reservation, should not be entitled for it again. This should be a cut off for generations.

Caste reservation has primarily social inclusion benefit, then come economic inclusion.

So, even with creamy layer getting undue benefits, caste reservation still serves its primary purpose i.e. social inclusion. This EWS can't do. Without reservation, a poor dalit is socially worse off than a poor GC. Due to discrimination of today and the effects of discrimination over several generations.

What i support is caste reservation, but given to non creamy layer only. Solves both issues - social inclusion and economic inclusion.
