Will probably watch it on iMAX 3D since it's supposed to be a snowed in weekend here - might as well go the full Monty rather than watching on 2D! BTW, I have resolutely decided to pronounce 'Avatar' the way it is in Sanskrit/Hindi rather than go with the Americanized version, 'Aevaataar'. It raised a few queries from my work colleagues, but I plan to stick to my horses on this one!
Yes, that word comes from Sanskrit, so should be pronounced that way.:two_thumbs_up: I was very surprised when I was young and my father used the word Ganges in an English sentence. I asked him and he told me that it's Ganges in English. I said it's a name and not a word that would get translated into something else in a new language. A name remains the same across all languages. My dad told me that in this case it's so. WTF??

saw it in IMAX 3D. amazing movie - worth watching it in theaters. I'm very cynical when it comes to the hype machine and all this talk about Cameron's "Vision" etc, and I didnt think Titanic was that good either. But this was great. If you are expecting unpredictable and clever plot and story, you wont find it here. But you will be blown away by the movie's visual effects. Hype-hate aside, I have to admit - the guy does have a tremendous imagination and he brought it to life beautifully. The beautiful detail and depth of this world he created is just jaw-droppingly awesome.

Exactly. The plot is as predictable as the sunrise, but that does not take away from the sense of anticipation one bit. Even Titanic's plot was extremely predictable, but that still did not prevent it from being one of the most compelling love stories ever told. Of course, the single biggest USP of the film is, like with most of Cameron's films, is the cutting edge technology. Its hard to believe all of the Na'vi characters are CG generated. The other aspect of Cameron's film-making is that even though he tells some of the most out-of-the-world tales (whether it be the Living tissue over metal endoskeleton Terminator in T2, or a sentient humanoid race that speaks English in a far away moon 4.3 light years from earth), the dramatic aspects of his storyline are so well woven into the script that it is all so believable. In short, Cameron does an excellent job of selling you the script, unlike other Sci-fi movies, which beyond a point, resemble a video game and you just go...'Yeaaaa right.....' Another reason for me to love this movie more than any other is because it is probably the most explicitly left-wing, liberal, anti-war, anti-American, anti-colonialisation movie ever made. Some of the dialogues are so blunt that it takes even an extreme left-winger like me by total surprise. :D. For example, the campaign by the humans to attack the Na'vi people on Pandora is described using the words, 'Shock and Awe', the exact same words the Bush Administration used to describe the Iraqi campaign. The Commander of the human army on Pandora describes the Na'vi race as 'savages' and proclaims 'We will fight terror with terror'. Cameron also takes several digs at the human attitude of a sense of entitlement towards the natural resources present in Earth. In the movie, humans are described as 'aliens from a dying planet' and people 'who kill their own mothers...'. And remarkably, towards the end of the movie when there's an actual fight between the humans and the Na'vi, the audience in the theatre were actually cheering everytime a human was killed... Kinda shows the general attitude of the people towards the ruthless policies of our govts.

Ok....I am having second thoughts about watching it tonight given that a lot of people praising the movie are also praising the epitome of chickflickism and cliches' date=' [b']The Titanic :nervous:
Come on Shwetabh, it aint gonna cost you a million dollars to watch it. $12.50 aint a bad investment for 2.5 hours of entertainment. :D

You didn't like Titanic Shwetabh ? That was one of the best love stories ever made and I absolutely detest that nonsense, barring the odd few every now and than, such as Devdas, The Reader, Slumdog Millionaire amongst others I am going to watch this just to see what the fuss is about.
