Crookbond Posted October 1, 2012 Posted October 1, 2012 After 16 overs in the Indian chase commies were talking about India needing to score final 4 runs by 16.4 overs to overtake Paki NRR and skip to 2nd place in the standings. With 8 wkts in hand India was in a position to do so easily but the way Kohli and Yuvi played the 17th over it seems they were not aware of the NRR situation. One would have expected the coach/team management to have kept track of the target and sent a message to the batsmen in the middle at the end of the 16th over. At least you can expect this from a coach who makes millions doing nothing but sitting on the backside. I hope there are no washouts on Tuesday else the goof-up will go down next to the Saffers botched attempt at reading the D/L table in the 2003 WC. U_G, 2 balls will not make a huge difference. We will know exactly what we have to do against the Saffers. Note that Pakistan's RR can change too if they win against Australia.
Zap_Brannigan Posted October 1, 2012 Posted October 1, 2012 Its not just the last over. We were quiet nicely placed by the 8th or 9th over. We still had 9 wickets left at that point. We should have tried to finish it in 15 overs. Now, we have to match pakistans margin if they win against Aus. If we had won it sooner against Pak, the most likely probable scenario for us to enter semis would be just a win against SA.
Laaloo Posted October 1, 2012 Posted October 1, 2012 I don't know why everyone is guaranteeing a Aus win against Pakistan. Warner sucks against spinners. Watson is due for a failure. And the middle order apart from Hussey is just not good enough. Their bowlers are alright. We needed to promote Raina ahead of Yuvi who was happy taking singles and dot balls. If we were a bit more proactive, then we would have been in a better position.
Ultimate_Game Posted October 1, 2012 Posted October 1, 2012 Ajmal was resorting to -ve bowling Not an excuse. 4 runs from 4 balls with 8 wkts in the hand is as easy as it gets in T20s. This is not Tests that bowlers can get away with wides down the leg side. It was clear that Yuvi & Kohli were not aware of the exact NRR target, i.e. to reach the target within 16.4 overs, and for that the coach has to take the blame. U_G' date=' 2 balls will not make a huge difference. We will know exactly what we have to do against the Saffers. Note that Pakistan's RR can change too if they win against Australia.[/quote'] I am not concerned about the 2 balls but the washout. If the matches are rained off on Tuesday we would look silly getting knocked out of the tourney coz we didn't reach the target within 16.4 overs. Hope that oversight doesn't come back to bite us in the butt. As for just 2 balls, if Pak wins, or even if Pak loses, India would have gained 2-3 extra balls against SA which would have been a huge advantage in a T20 game. E.g., let's say Pak beats Aus with 1.4 overs to spare. Now India will need to beat SA with 2 overs to spare whereas they would have only needed to beat SA with 1.2 overs to spare had we reached the target earlier. Conversely if Pak gets hammered by Aus, those 2 balls would allowed us a better NRR cushion against SA as we could lose to SA narrowly and still make it to semis. Now the margin has become even slimmer. But as I mentioned earlier I hope the 16.4 debate becomes moot and we get matches on Tuesday, and India reaches the semis
asterix Posted October 1, 2012 Posted October 1, 2012 You can clearly see all other teams do get useful tips and advice time to time especially the batsmen. Indian team is the only one in which that fat coach slumbers somewhere in the dugout without having any clue of the match situation..
Old guy Posted October 1, 2012 Posted October 1, 2012 arre its 1 ball diff! if pak loses ..theres run rate will go down if we win our will go up there would have been very very lil difference yes if both games get washed out then it might hurt but thts unlikely isnt it?
Clarke Posted October 1, 2012 Posted October 1, 2012  Me for the SF? Only if Murugan doesn't end up being a panauti.
Trichromatic Posted October 1, 2012 Posted October 1, 2012 Equation will change in next game. If you can worry about 2 balls, then you can also ask why didn't we finish it in 14 overs. :dontknow:

No way in the world would Yuvi and Kohli have cantered to a win when a bit of urgency would have gotten us over Pak in the standings. I guess the coach has to take the blame for this oversight as you can't expect players to keep track of the NRR in the heat of a T20 match. But Fletcher should have ensured Indian batsmen knew about the target and I'm surprised none of the post-match analysis or interviewers brought up the point when rain is a very real possibility in the tourney and we have already witnessed a few rained out or shortened games in the tourney so far.
Laaloo Posted October 1, 2012 Posted October 1, 2012 Anyways be happy that we at least won a few balls later, if the fielders had taken Kohli's catch earlier, then Dhoni would have come in after a Sharma duck of course, and tuk tuk his way till the 19th over.

In a tourney which has been severely affected by rain wouldn't it make much sense to make sure we leap-frog to the 2nd spot to ensure our entry into the semis in case of a washout?
coffee_rules Posted October 1, 2012 Posted October 1, 2012 -0.429 to -0.452 is as close as one can get. 3 overs got us from -2.5 to -0.452. So. a win against SA is a must. A loss , then Pak has to lose badly than India. Our match is after Pak. So, if Pak loses, we have a target to achieve even to lose by.
