nobody is disputing his prowess in the subcontinent where the ball doesnt bounce. here is his average vs teams abroad with pitches with good bounce v Aussies-19 v SA-19 V-WI-20 not a single 50 and still cannot handle the bounce after all this years. If the aim is to build a great team for the WC then Raina should not be part of the equation because he is a obvious weak link.
You forget his fielding and his dibbly dobbly bowling. very important. His batting has been decent and will get better

so you think Raina is getting better at handling the short ball?

not in Australia. That place is not spin friendly. I personally doubt he will get better. He has had enough matches away from home now in general. One of the reasons why we sucked in the 2011 series v Aus and SL was exactly cause our lower middle order consisting of Raina and Sir (at that time) could not handle the heat. You saw this in the IPL this season as well. When the pitch was flat Raina scored centuries. When there was something in it for the pacers Johnson was his baap. I remember him in the finals being a rabbit stuck in front of the headlights against Malinga on a pitch with something in it for the seamers.

Valid Observation assuming the stats are correct. Onus is on Raina to up the ante.

You have conveniently left out England, I can see that. Edit - Where did you get these averages from? Here is what I see on Cricinfo. vs Australia 34.45 / in Australia 26 vs South Africa 25/ in South Africa 23 vs WI 20/ in WI 21 No code has to be inserted here.

in Australia means any team in Australia but cowboys criteria is in Australia, vs Australia on bouncy pitches! He's played just 8 matches in Australia - I think there has to be some leeway on that front.

Raina as a total package is going to be a vital member for our side. We cannot possibly deny he can be a match winner on his own . In ODIs he may not get enough chances to prove that. But he is a fierce hitter who can turn the game around in a matter of 3 or 4 overs. more than against bounce his hitting against spinners is worrying me the most. He used to consistently slamming spinners earlier. Nowadays he is not that consistent.

maybe its just the form? also he is clear ftb..nothing wrong with that as most odis are played on flat tracks... imo this short ball problem is clearly starting to mess up even his rest of game.. earlier he used to play so many beautiful drives they are much less now a days .. he is bit tentative coming onto front foot and it shows in his game.. spinners well he did struggle against swann a lot in tests but yeah i remember when he pawned mendis and other lungan spinners on spin tracks but that was long time back..

Don't touch Raina. Let's not forget Raina and Kohli were being compared not too long ago. This shows how consistent Raina was whenever asked to bat at 3 or down the order. His order keeps changing. He works well for the team when needed. He is probably one of our best fielders in the team too. I sometime fail to understand our fans. Same fans forget to question the place of players like Rohit Sharma who have been shyt all these yeasr and right away after couple of failures, start pointing finger at fine performers like Raina.

Yeah I guess some inherent biases are always there. My fear is India shouldn't have sitting duck at no. 4 in Australia after losing the openers cheaply. And more critically if it s form issue, everyone is willing to give that leeway based on past performance. But if it technique issue, I know how the same lallus jumping up and down here will be on his case after 2 or 3 dismissals off the short ball. There is problem. We have to start by acknowledging that. He has to address it.

Listen Poyzz, it is not for this performance at all. Although today's failure made me look back at his performances abroad. In Australia, England and South Africa. And I am also not about removing him from the team. But surely, there is huge question mark on his technique against the short ball. He also seems mentally all over the place in that situation. I think he has get better before the WC.
He was second highest run getter last time in England in 2011.

So the leeway was understandable for him although it became too long as you say and of course, Gambhir's attitude also became deplorable in time. Raina is a mighty effective slogger on flat tracks/against slow bowling. However, against high quality pace bowling or on bouncy pitches he is only going to have sporadic success as his technique is too fundamentally flawed. Its unrealistic and unfair to expect such a flawed player to score runs on Australian pitches in 2015.

Won the MOS the last time we won a bilateral ODI series. He is part of our core for the 2015 WC, best fielder in our side. This thread is :fail:
