diga Posted August 19, 2013 Posted August 19, 2013 At least 35 people, mostly women and children, were killed in Bihar this morning when an express train ploughed into pilgrims at a remote and poorly connected area in the state's Khagaria district, around 160 km from Patna. The incident at around 9 am triggered mayhem as a violent mob reportedly assaulted the train driver, set coaches on fire and held railway staff hostage. The station was vandalised and damaged even as locals tried to remove bodies from the tracks. Those killed were mostly kanwarias or devotees of Lord Shiva, who were crossing the tracks at the Dhamara station in Katyani Sthan, a religious stopover. They had reportedly exited another train, when the Rajyarani Express train from Saharsa, travelling at a speed of 80 km/hour on its way to Patna, crushed them. "The Express train was not scheduled to stop at this station," said Railway spokesperson Amitabh Prabhakar. According to the Lok Sabha MP from Khagaria, Dinesh Chandra Yadav, 35 people were killed and nearly as many injured. But the violence at the station delayed rescue workers. An angry crowd reportedly threw stones at the train, which stopped at a distance, pulled out the driver and beat him. The mob also took some railway staff hostage and set the train on fire, along with the other train. As the situation spiraled out of control, many railway personnel reportedly hid or ran away, leaving the station completely unmanned, say officials. Train services have been suspended on the route. Railway officials say the situation is volatile. Rescue workers, district and police officials took hours to reach the spot, considered to be a remote part of the district. "We are finding it difficult to reach the spot as there are no roads," said SK Bhardwaj, Additional Director General, Bihar Police. Whoever is the signalling-incharge must be hanged... :wall:

Beat up the train driver and setting the train on fire? :WTF: The crowd thinks he is driving a lorry or something? Even a train travelling at 20kmph could kill. As the diga said, the mistake could be with the signaling incharge.

If they had exited another train just some time earlier,(not clear how many mins) why was the Rajyarani Express allowed to travel at 80km/hour?

People are forced to do this to get across the tracks. Do this once the train has stopped Or this when the train's not in station

If this is the case in Bangalore, bihar must have it a lot worse especially when there are a lot of pilgrims in the station.

You can't stop using a track just because a train is parked in the adjoining track. 80 kmph, 40 or 20, people should know the dangers of crossing tracks especially if they're used to non-existence of overhead bridges.

When people are crossing the tracks, it is their responsibility to see whether a train is coming or not. How the hell, they could not see such a huge train coming :wall:

I remember my mother telling me how once instead of helping injured people, locals started looting passengers when there was a train accident there. That place is full idiots. It's not uncommon in those areas to stop any train even though those trains are not scheduled to stop there. I wasn't surprised when a person once told me, "Gaadi yahan rukti to nahi hai, par rukegi". Those who set train on fire should be arrested. I guess even driver tried to stubborn and didn't care.
