I am not talking about family members like brother, sister, father and mother. I am not even talking about very distant relatives. I am talking about relatives like your uncle (taya/chachu fathers brother), bhua, mama, maassi etc. Especially if you were brought up in joint family in non-metro city in Doordarshan era. Suddenly they migrated abroad to countries like Canada, USA etc and simply don't care now. I sometimes feel so alone, and get hurt slightly that above relatives changed so drastically towards their siblings ie. my parents. I dont even know my cousins very well. They simply dont care if I am dead or alive, married or unmarried.......

Nobody truly cares for us, except parents and our kids. One will be the luckiest person in the world if the the wife/gf truly care for us. And most will be having atleast one friend who gives everything to us.

The answer is a big NO They in fact envy my family and my success. My cousins (born Americans) live maybe 2 minutes from me but we have zero connections. We do rakshabanthan and stuff b/c our families sort of force it on us but otherwise we don't even talk to each other. They never wanted my family to immigrate to this country. But guess what? I got way ahead of any of my cousins plus I don't give a crap about what they do.

‘Care’ is a very broad term. From a practical standpoint, it can mean many things. I have several relatives, with varying degrees of closeness. I don’t view them all as the same for various reasons. Obviously I wish all of my relatives well, but I am not going to be in any hurry to drop whatever I am doing and rush to aid for every single one of them.

Yes. We all care about each other and end up spending a few days with each other if we are in the same country. All of us have lived in different countries at one point or another so there isn't actually any one part of the extended family which is the "left behind" type. It's kept together mostly by the women in the family who are very tight and we are all updated about their lives, professional, personal and about their cats and dogs. There are a few members who don't make the effort and feel disconnected and then blame the others for treating them like outsiders. But there even the kids, who are all in Washington DC, don't really bother about their parents (sick, with a lot of ancestral property), so I guess there's something wrong internally.

relatives are waste. they are an obligation... friends are the best. we choose our friends. there is no obligation. whenever a friend crosses the line, there is no cold war. u just tell him that u did not like it. it is a very straight forward relationship. but relatives are not like that. we need to be diplomatic and bear with them no matter what... family>friends>relatives

I have awesome set of cousins. There is no obligation, we just enjoy each other's company and get along very well. We might not get together as much as we would like to but when we do we have a great time.
