msb1991 Posted October 13, 2013 Posted October 13, 2013 6 for Ojha makes it 9 in the match. Surely this has him pushing Ashwin for his slot. Two fifties for Chawla and an expensive four wicket haul, after a fine county stint perhaps has him pushing Jadeja for the number seven slot or Ashwin for the number 8 slot.

They are certainties for now but just one or two bad series can change that. We need to be prepared for injuries and loss of form so we don't have awful instances like where RP Singh came in the England tour.
Crookbond Posted October 15, 2013 Posted October 15, 2013 Duleep Trophy - East Zone lose to North Zone ... on a toss! No kidding! First instance that I have heard as such. Shahbaz Nadeem does not like losing a toss. In the previous Ranji Trophy season, the Jharkhand captain won six out of nine tosses before his team lost out to Punjab on the first-innings lead in the quarter-finals. But on Monday, Nadeem lost the most important toss, one which would have taken East Zone to the Duleep Trophy final had he won it. A wet outfield in Kochi had erased all optimism of any play on the extra fifth day of the semi-final, forcing the match referee V Narayan Kutty to walk to the pair of Harbhajan Singh and Nadeem, the North Zone and East captains, to explain the rule that the winner would be determined by the toss of a coin. Till then Harbhajan was joking with Nadeem and the other East players. But now Nadeem was slightly anxious http://www.espncricinfo.com/duleep-trophy-2013-14/content/current/story/679541.html
SLICKR392 Posted October 15, 2013 Posted October 15, 2013 Unmukt Chand- Nvr felt so happy on winning the toss. Hahaha.. Finals now. #duleeptrophy #tosskaboss
jalebi_bhai Posted October 15, 2013 Posted October 15, 2013 Gravity deciding the result of a match......:headshake:.......
G_B_ Posted October 15, 2013 Posted October 15, 2013 india needs to move away from this knockout mentality in tests. Look at the english counties. Divide them into leagues and have promotion relegation. similarly how about duldeep trophy becomes a round robin with run rate deciding who wins? or even points.

Precambrian Posted October 16, 2013 Posted October 16, 2013 So what's the alternative then? People criticize so much, but this is so rare an occurrence.
G_B_ Posted October 16, 2013 Posted October 16, 2013 Do you know about Ranji Trophy? i do and thats a knockout competition to win it..... hence the first innings becomes paramount in most cases to the chances of the side in most cases.

But this was not a ranji trophy match. Ranji trophy format is pretty goof right now though cna still be improved. Ranji is knock only for QF, SF and Final. teams first need to play 8 league matches to qualify for QF.

There is absolutely no time left in the packed calendar for that to happen. We should be glad at least they have not yet shelved the Duleep Trophy. I like what Sri Lanka have done this year. Pick 40-45 best players in the country, divide them into three teams and play on a round robin format, basically the old Challenger Trophy format being changed from LOI cricket to FC. Scrap the challengers and instead have the red, blue and green teams fight on a round robin basis in 5-day long FC matches. Needs about the same time as the DT takes right now

Have a system whereby ranji teams can draft in upto 4 players outside their local development. That way people who perform in the lower rungs are spotted and have their chance in division 1. That way you can say concentrate on division 1 and 2 to and understand where the quality players will come from. @sane that is a fair point.
saneindian Posted October 16, 2013 Posted October 16, 2013 Finals starting today but rains predicted in Chennai. Good news is Viru and Gauti are going to play for NZ. I hope the weather remains good. Will ESPN cover the finals?
