Smith is a realist, he knows that IPL is a longshot for him, his ODI and T20 career seems to be winding down due to the male chicken-man and his Test career alone is not going to last for more than a couple of years, max. Whereas with Surrey, he has the chance to settle in next year, he is still only 33 and realistically, pull in another million bucks playing against the club bowlers in England for the next 4-5 years. Hard to believe Smith would've retired on his own accord if he didnt have such a lucrative retirement package in place at the age of 33.

Probably earning £300,000 a year with UK and SA playing expenses. Thats something county cricket can offer. Stability. Alphonso Thomas is another Saffer who turned his back on the IPL cause Somerset offered him stability. The plan for Smith is to play for Surrey and eventually become part of the fabric of the club and even enter coaching. the fact that Surrey has appointed Ford , a person who Smith has got on well with may also have influenced his decision.
G_B_ Posted March 3, 2014 Author Posted March 3, 2014 Before the IPL came along, thats what most players from SA, Aus Nz etc did. 6 months of your domestics. 6 months of county cricket. In that sense the IPL really put a spanner in the works of county cricket attracting the very best.

daryl1985 Posted March 4, 2014 Posted March 4, 2014 The Aussies or Johnson did not end his career. Smith is mentally tough and leads from the front. I think he announced his retirement before the end of the test to take some of the pressure off the rest of his team-mates.

Our greatest batsman of all time, of all time sucked for 2 years before calling it quits. Smith did good here. :giggle:
