Forget stats and all, Sehwag was a game-changer. A real maverick batsman. He put the fear into opposition bowlers, put captains on the backfoot when they should be attacking.

And this is why Sehwag makes it to any team in any era. Technique be damned, one thing we can say with a fair degree of confidence, is that Sehwag would've caned any attack on a true pitch or in the subcontinent. Yes, his style is obviously more hit or miss than a SunnyG or a Geoff Boycott's when the ball is moving around but Sehwag makes up for it with his astonishing strike rate. Even if he scores 1 hundred in 10 innings, chances are it is gonna be a big hundred (IIRC, except for bradman and Lara, no one has cracked as many big hundreds as Sehwag) , scored at nearly run-a-ball and the team would be sitting at 300 after 2 and half sessions. Ultimately, Shewag has a century everywhere bar new zealand. The fact that he is a god opening in the subcontinent, can hold his own in australia and has scored centuries in ENG and RSA, means he is definitely worth having in your team as an opener. And this is where the difference between Sanga and Sehwag lies. Sanga's stats overseas are a bit better but he's faced worse bowling and doesnt score at the stupendous rate that Sehwag does. If Sanga did, he too would then make up for his more hit-and-miss overseas record.

Both faced McGrath, Gillespie and Aussie bowlers and did well against them. Simply, Shewag is an indian great, and it stops there. No way he's teh third best batsman from Asia. Especially when Dravid, Sangakkara and Miandad is also there in contention.

Sehwag is a test opener, and traditionally openers were meant to see off the new ball and surviving that, they were supposed to make a lot of runs. But Sehwag redefined the role of a test opener completely. He has done something that no one, repeat no one has done before, that is to flay bowling attacks from ball number one!! Hayden, Gayle, Dishan, Smith, Jayasuriya etc are known as dashing openers in test cricket, and Sehwag makes all these names look like tortoises in terms of scoring. Sehwag scored 30-40% faster than his nearest competing opening batsmen and yet his averages are amongst the best in this category of the modern breed of openers. Sehwag is a once in a generation batsman and he has given rise to a whole new generation of exciting batsmen like David Warner. Sanga is world class but he cannot boast of something unique like Sehwag. Afridi was a blind slogger, and sloggers don't average 50 in test cricket after 100 tests.
