We can criticise MSD in other threads, but this is to cherish his finest moments in test cricket. For me, there are two - one as captain and one as player. As captain, his 8-2 field against Australia at Nagpur that completely stymied them after a big partnership and led to our win. As player, his 76* at Lord's that helped us draw the test and thereby resulting in a series win after we won the next test.

for me it was the 2007 Eng series... rescued us a test and that resulted in a series win for us. Thought we would win lot more under him, unfortunately for us it was not to be

Three tests that I'll remember: 1. Chennai Test Double Hundred.... I watched it in the stadium 2. Chennai Test chasing 387 on the final day...Sehwag and Sachin got us the win, but I thought Dhoni was an aggressive test captain 3. Lord's Test win - 2014

Sorry I don't want to be very critical on the day when he retired but mention of that shows how hollow his test achievements have been (I understand you are referring to Centurion Test which we lost and Sachin had hit his 50th Test century). If you include that 90 than I would say Amit Mishra's best in test cricket is 84 which he scored in last test of 2011 English tour. That 90 was in dead test match which we lost by an innings.

Yes. Even Sachin's that ton would and should never be talked as the highlight of his test achievements. It's easier to counter attack when you have nothing to lose. That's what Kohli had also told of Johnson's assault in last test match that he was under no pressure as batsman so could attack. Unfortunately a large number of Dhoni's 50's have come into similar situations. His today's 24 was much more meaningful than many of his purposeless 50s.
