Earlier I used to dislike him but of late he doesn't seem a bad choice. Guy is a seriously under rated batsman, in hindsight his knock in Trent Bridge saved us the blushes. Also in Zimbabwe he held his own in difficult batting conditions. See he is not a brilliant player but looks like someone who is an honest trier and isn't inept against swing/seam like Nohit. Of course Herath will be a different challenge and Chinnaswamy being a green mamba(in Ranji), he may not be that much used to quality spin bowling. But where to find quality players of spin bowling in India atm? He is also a nice line and length bowler and can provide reprieve to our other bowlers by bowling 10-15 tight overs every day. These double paced sluggish pitches will suit him, don't be surprised if he plugs out a couple of their batsmen. My XI in light of Dhawan's injury 1. Vijay(walks in) 2. Rahul(he wouldn't have got in a few hours back) 3. Rahane(I would play him at no 3 because he is far better against swing/seam than spin. Let him start off against the quicks and hopefully by the time the spinners come into action he is well set and confident. He was very tentative against the spinners in the 1st test) 4. Kohli 5. Pujara(our best player against spin when in form, he is the key to neutralizing Herath and Kaushal in the absence of left handers in our side, IMO he is the key for India to turn this deficit around) 6. Binny 7. Saha 8. Ashwin 9. Bhuvi 10. Mishrajee 11. Ishant(expecting a flurry of wickets from him at some point this series, also a resilient tailender...others should learn from him about how to occupy the crease and play to your full potential) This XI is our best bet right now.BK can strike with the new ball while Ishant is our most stable fast bowler. Both BK and Binny can keep things tight throughout the match and I am sure they are better wicket taking options than the brainless duo of Varun and Umesh. Ashwin and Mishrajee should be our primary attack bowlers(Ishant too can be one if he wakes up on the right side of the bed). On our batting front no Rohit !!! Vijay and Pujara will bolster our unit and now we have 4 bowlers who can bat(Mishraji has an 84 in England; Binny, BK,Ashwin combined are equal to 2 decent batsmen). I had high hopes from Umesh and Varun but that little adventure has become very costly. They have pace, yes but 145 kph full tosses, half volleys, wides etc won't fetch you wickets. They leak runs like crazy and in these low scoring pitches they have no place in the starting XI. All they have been doing since the Australia tour is allowing batsmen some easy runs, boosting their confidence and putting pressure on the bowler at the other end(Ashwin would have been more effective if these idiots hadn't released the pressure every single time in Australia). http://stats.espncricinfo.com/worldT20/engine/records/team/match_results.html?class=1;id=416;type=ground P Sara is a result producing deck(probably the most sporting wicket in Lanka with assistance for both pace and spin). Spinners have picked 71 wickets in 4 matches since 2002(http://www.espncricinfo.com/magazine/content/story/397868.html) and Herath has a very impressive record here(average 23 odd in 5 matches) . Pacers too have done extremely well, for example NZ pacers took 17 out of 20 wickets here when they stunned the Lankans last time around(and they didn't bowl express fast that time,mostly operated in the 130-138 kph range with lateral movement, so further no need of our 2 fastest bowlers). Lanka have lost 3 out of their last 4 matches here including to India in 2010, this is the best opportunity to strike back !!! I am hopeful that with this XI we can bounce back. On paper we are stronger than Lanka, just that we were playing with 9 players against 13 in Galle. Also the collective brainfart in the 2nd innings didn't help. Harbhajan simply can't be allowed to play here in spite of P Sara being a decent hunting ground for spinners because atm Vijay is a better off spinner than him.

Thanks for such a detailed answer. I too have the same views. Binny (although unknown against quality spin) can play on tougher tracks. Saved us BIG TIME in Trent Bridge. My lineup (which I posted elsewhere) is exactly similar to yours except for Rahul (at that time I didn't know Dhawan was ruled out). Colombo aids pacers so I think 3 pacers is a good idea. Plus Bhuvi, Binny and Ashwin need to strengthen our batting (which seems hopeless atm). If we can sort our batting, I do feel we can not only bounce back but also win the series but its a big IF (our batting sucks that much :(( :(( :(( ) I am not too keen on Aaron or Umesh (they leak soooo many runs) but looks like Aaron (and not Bhuvi) is playing going by cricinfo reports.
jf1gp_1 Posted August 19, 2015 Posted August 19, 2015 Despite how we folded last game, I still feel our batsman are fine. Just need time to settle down. Pujara will return at 3, given how Binny was flown he will be there. I suspect we will again go with 3 spinners and Ishant.

Others get 100 chances but Binny fails once and the knives are out. At least he played 40 balls which is a start. I never knew how his game against spin bowling was, today I got the answer. He is atrocious against it just like all the others bar a couple.

Dhawan is never gonna be the kind of player who will look compact/elegant but he is effective in SC.

Not a future option for us but fits in for now. Completely agree with the bolded part bro. His runs hide the deficit in his game against spin/swing/seam but at some point he will be exposed. Also got to admit he is very lucky. I don't remember a Dhawan biggie which didn't have at least 3 reprieves(remember the NZ tour?). RSA, Eng, Aus were ruthless as far as catching was concerned and that is one reason he failed so miserably in those places.
