There were ugly scenes at Feroz Shah Kotla ground as rival captains Gautam Gambhir and Manoj Tiwary nearly came to exchanging blows during the Ranji Trophy match between Delhi and Bengal, here on Saturday.

Situation came to such a pass that umpire K Srinath had to come between the two players as Gambhir moved towards Tiwary to hit him and he also came charging at the Delhi skipper.

In fact in an unprecedented ugly gesture, Gambhir even pushed umpire Srinath, who was trying to get him out of the way to hit Tiwary.

Touching umpire is a grave offence in cricket, which could invite a ban.

The incident happened in 7.1 over when Partha Sarathi Bhattacharjee got out of Manan Sharma's bowling and Tiwary came in to bat at No. 4 wearing a cap.

Tiwary first took guard and was about to take strike. But he stopped the bowler and signalled at the dressing room to bring his helmet as a pacer was operating from the other end.

Delhi players felt that it was a deliberate time wasting tactic.

Manan ticked off Manoj and he told him to lay off. All of a sudden, Gambhir, at first slip, got into the action and started abusing the Bengal skipper, who then retaliated.

Gambhir with his fists raised charged towards Tiwary, who was also not ready to back down. Umpire Srinath came in the middle, but Gambhir to everyone's horror pushed the umpire trying to get him out of the way.
Manoj was then seen shouting at Gambhir, saying: "Did I tell you anything? Why did you have to come in between."

Both Tiwary and Gambhir will be summoned by the match referee Valmick Buch.

Reminds me of college day cricket :) Since there is no one like referee to control situation it would be no holds barred situation.Delhi boys are known for their anger (exception of Viru). Manoj Prabakar, Kohli, Gambhir,

GG seems to have too high an opinion about himself. Disgusting human being !!! Hope the concerned authorities take punitive action against those who bring the game to disrepute.

Now that GG has no great chance of making a return to the Indian team, he is resorting to these to stay in the news.

Even if he had behaved liked Dalai lama he would not have gotten in until he stops poking outside the off. But he is one of those guys who has this in-your face attitude.

Gambhir's statement clarifies this whole issue.

GAUTAM GAMBHIR STATEMENT after the incident in the ranji game between Delhi and Bengal today, involving him and Manoj Tiwary

" I was most surprised that certain sections of the media have reported that I pushed an on-field umpire during 3rd day's play of Delhi-Bengal Ranji trophy game. It's factually incorrect. Here is what happened. Manoj Tiwary walked into bat with Bengal score reading 2 for 2 wickets down. After conceding first innings lead we were keen to press home the advantage by playing positive cricket. The match was extremely well poised and we got fielders around Manoj trying to pressurise him. At which point he started taking longer than usual to face the next ball. My team-mates urged Manoj to refrain from wasting time. Instead of getting on with his batting he started abusing some of Delhi players. At which point I came in and told him what I thought about his demeanour and there was a verbal exchange. The umpires did a wonderful job of calming the situation by intervening right there. And the matter ended.

At no point did I threaten or pushed any on-field umpires. Nor did I threaten to beat Manoj up. Infact, I attended match referee's hearing post the day's play where he accepted that he doesn't have any video evidence of me pushing the umpire. On the contrary the match referee conceded he had video evidence where Manoj is seen pushing Pradeep Sangwan. I am not complaining here but stating what the honourable match referee told me.

Then, there are parts of the news story which claim to be quoting my verbal exchange with Manoj. May I humbly add here that the comments attributed to me are incorrect. And how a reporter who is sitting beyond the 60-yard boundary line quote something which is happening near the pitch?

I am a proud cricketer who is trying to win Ranji Trophy for my state. For me it is a game of cricket where both teams are fired up to win and may the best team win."

"I had kept my helmet near the boundary rope since it had become wet. That was about it...everyone saw I was not the first to react. He tried to hit but could not. He pushed the umpire who came in between. It's there in the video, you all have seen it," Tiwary said. "I have huge respect for Gambhir for whatever he has done for the country but he crossed the limit with his comments. He made personal comments."

the fact that gambhir is big name known not be shy of getting into argument and the fact this match wasn't televised gives these tabloids free license to exaggerate the crap out of everything. No way does Gambhir get away with just a fine for pushing an umpire.

"I spoke to Ganguly yesterday after the incident. Somewhere his name was also raised during that incident yesterday. I don't know exactly what happened. Something was said. That's why I was very upset. We represent Bengal and don't want to listen something against the community. Sledging is fine but players should know where to hold back and not cross the line."
