Overestimation leads to downfall of a precious lower order batsman

It's about Suresh Raina. He's been dropped from Indian odi side.He hasn't done anything to get a recall either.Did the management overestimate his caliber and resulted in his downfall. He was as integral to team as Kohli and Dhoni once. Now he is not indespensable anymore.I remeber in 2013 vs Australia Dhoni thought he could play at 4 but he was badly exposed. The experiment ended there and the nightmare for Raina too.Again in 2016 t20 wc he was consistently promoted to no4 and it seemed like he could never bat 15 or more overs in a t20 game.He doesn't have the technique of Virat nor has the flamboyance of Yuvi(of old) or Rohit. But one thing he could do which no other Indian batsman could do is accelerate from the very first ball of a t20 match. But throughout this world cup he was caught in a precarious position where he had to steady the ship and ended up having a forgettable tournament. We carve for a Andre Russell and Raina can be ours.He already proved that.He might not be a physical beast but he can clear d fence. All is not over,He still can get his tailor made role back as he is below 30

I still feel Raina is a valuable player in Limited overs. This IPL, I will be keeping a close eye on Raina and how he goes for Gujarat Lions.

Its a combination of Intl bowlers have him sorted out, and batting position/role. Maybe after IPL - he may get a few more ODI chances, but he has to work really hard to prove himself again.

I think team mngmt has to use him well, yes he is a very valueable player.

He can accelrate from ball 1, he is terrific fielder and also one of few fielder whom u can trust in slips. He can also chip in few overs as well. So no matter how much we want him out, Indian team needs someone like him unless someone does all things he does.

But is he used well , No he isnt. When ull ask raina to build an innings he wnt be able to coz he wud be confused to either go for his shots or look to grind the innings and thats the point when opp are sure that they hve to attack and he has enough chinks in his technique to get him out. At 6 when he is asked to hit from beg. most times he is sure about his role and opp is confused to either get him out or control his runs which pushes opp on backfoot.

Project Raina has to end. Dhoni has to bat up coz they both are doing each other roles which they are not comfertable with. Let dhoni be the grinder and raina be the aggresive one.

You should not let Raina to hang around and consolidate, that's not his strength. His strength is to hit the ball from ball one. He should ideally come to bat only in last 10 overs in ODIs and last 5 in T20s. India doesn’t have a hitter down the order, so Raina still can play that role and he will be more than useful with his great fielding ability useful bowling.

Raina has developed an odd phobia against short ball, he was a world beater till 2011 World Cup, after that he's declined.

I remember watching him bat in Sydney test in the previous Aus tour, his entire weight was on backfoot and was not ready to come forward, staying within the crease only. Shane Watson bowled a good length straight delivery and Raina edged it to the keeper going for a golden duck.

How is Raina's case one of over-estimation? More a case of under utilization.

He doesn't have the technique to be a no4 batsman(In t20,it hardly matters though).
