Kumble backs Kohli's aggressive mindset

Anil Kumble, India's new head coach, has said he will back Virat Kohli's aggression and desire to push all boundaries to secure wins. He also said India would approach tough situations positively during the long Test season that starts with a four-match series in the West Indies.

Kohli, a picture of composure, wore a sheepish smile as talk of his "over-aggression" did the rounds, but insisted that India's mindset change wasn't a one-off, and that it was something they had planned when he took over the reins of the Test team in January 2015.

"Our first intention is to win - that won't change," he said. "Yes, there have been situations from where we've lost, but we know we were in that position because of the positive brand of cricket that we played." The reference, clearly not lost on anyone, was the Adelaide Test in December 2014, which India lost while trying to chase down 364 on the final day.

"We need to realise we got there in the first place because we played at 80%, so the focus is on the remaining 20%. Anil bhai's mindset was the same during his playing days, so the mindset makes a difference. If you are hesitant, you don't explore a different side to our ability as a team. Our motive is the same. We will play with the same mindset of trying to win the series and not just being satisfied with solitary Test wins."

I almost feel like Kohli and Kumble are reading our minds. They are addressing all the issues we as fans had with the Indian team in tests (only abroad) in the last 5 years. We've been fantastic at home but overseas .. terrible performances, lack of desire and planning and strategy, not going for wins at times, hesitant mindset etc.

Of course it's all just talk at the moment, but only when you talk about stuff that you think and plan what's required, and have a better chance of achieving it, instead of just turning up and hope to play well and win.

Just to give an example to the many amateurs on this forum, if such a conflict emerged in investment banking ( sell side and buy side working together) it would lead to criminal prosecution of everyone concerned and a permanent full stop to your career in this field. Beggars belief that VVS allowed himself to be part of the selection panel knowing his financial stake in Kumble's venture.

Even more disappointingly, shocking (not really) that the fat cats of BCCI would allow formation of such a panel in the immediate aftermath of Supreme Court's ruling on conflict of interest issues within the organization. Ganguly with his own shenanigans regarding the selection process further confirmed he is a petty man who allows personal grudges to influence selectorial process. Literally, nobody has come out looking good from this entire fiasco, except, perhaps, Goddy. But that might be providence.

The role of the selection panel should have been to set down an institutional precedence that would be invoked every time the decision to appoint a new Team India coach came up. Instead, it has allowed matter of conflicting interest, personal grudges, and ad hoc-ism prevail. If Dravid and Tendulkar have any sense, they would do well to stay clear of this muck.

Kumble will teach India to deal with 'tough moments' - Tendulkar

Sachin Tendulkar believes the Indian team has a reservoir of experience to tap into in the form of Anil Kumble, the new head coach, in a busy season in which they play 17 Tests starting with the four in the West Indies. Kumble, Tendulkar said, will train the team to show fight in all situations.

"It's about being a tough character and being able to stand on your feet in tough moments. That's what I feel Anil will teach them," Tendulkar told reporters at Lord's on Tuesday. "There are crunch moments in any match, so approaching those moments is important. He will be out there to win each and every moment."

While Tendulkar, who was a member of the BCCI's cricket committee that played a key role in selecting the coach, didn't go into the details of the selection process, he was effusive in his praise for Kumble. He termed him a "hard competitor" who will not compromise on work ethic.

"My experience with Anil has been fantastic," Tendulkar said. "He has been a match-winner, and the guys have got a lot to learn from him. Anil is ready to share everything he has learnt from this wonderful sport. He played for close to 20 years, so there is plenty to share. I'll just tell the players to grasp as much information from Anil as possible, and enjoy the game above everything else."

On the topic of bat size, something that has been in the news regularly of late, Tendulkar said he reflected Australia batsman David Warner's sentiments: flat pitches are a bigger threat to the game than any other perceived imbalance between bat and ball.

"The wickets need to change; they need to be more helpful for bowlers," Tendulkar said. "In T20s, the greatest of bowlers are being reverse-swept. Three-hundred is no longer competitive in ODIs.

"So there should be at least one format where bowlers have a better chance of executing their skills and making it more interesting for spectators. It's difficult for someone to sit for five days, so you have to look at changing surfaces. I don't think it's got much to do with bats, but I'm sure people on the [relevant] panel will be able to look into it. That's what David Warner has spoken about too."

Watever but that Lazy maggi would definately make anil kumble rich all by himself

Just because someone has all the time to play their shots and the word"Lazy Elegance" is used doesn't mean someone is actually Lazy....Rohit is the 3rd best fielder in the line up behind Jadeja and Rahane

Maggie is so lazy, sometimes he expects the ball to hit his stand still bat and runaway to the boundary instead of the bat hitting the ball...

Ashwin on kumble:

"He has brought in a lot of meticulousness among the group. There is some very good discipline in the nets. The batsmen get out to the nets at the perfect time for a start, and that's not been going around for some time [laughs]."
