Most fast bowlers have passion when they begin their careers, but what separates great fast bowlers from the rest is the confidence/self belief they maintain over a very long period of time. Consistency is a problem, too. The very fact that we have a thread to post anecdotal evidence of our fast bowlers' abilities is a testament to the lack of consistent performances and thus, good numbers over a long period of time. Once-in-a-bluemoon just does not cut it. That said, please keep posting these videos, people. Thrilling! express bowling 1

maniac Posted July 7, 2016 Posted July 7, 2016 That Spell Sreeshanth bowled in the 1st innings 2nd test in England 2011 was amazing....And within a span of moments, totally lost it and went back to being crap.........He would bowl this spell that would turn a match both ways within a span of minutes RP and Sreeshanth should have won more games for us and managed better.....Well atleast the dressing room hated Sreeshanth....what is RP's excuse??? He was best buddies with the skipper.
express bowling Posted July 7, 2016 Posted July 7, 2016 (edited) Our pace bowling culture as well as pace bowlers themselves have had many problems ....and one of the bigger ones is trying to be spectacular instead of being steady. So many pacers have tried or try to produce that magic delivery once in a blue moon instead of sticking to good length, around off stump , boring bowling ball after ball and and over after over. We do not need occasionally spectacular pacers but steady ones with wicket taking ability and pace/ bounce . Edited July 7, 2016 by express bowling Rightarmfast, tweaker, Mosher and 1 other 4

Unless BCCI produces domestic wickets which help pacers to have faith and confidence among themselves, we will keep on straying. To start with, BCCI should have a lush lawns on every International stadiums and make it mandatory at club level to maintain a lawn, which will only be cut into pitch, a night before the game. This will requires some additional expense/grants and planning from BCCI to clubs, but its not impossible. Edited July 7, 2016 by mishra

That only works if there are other pacers around you who can make a difference.......McGrath was more effective with that consistency because he had Lee,Warne in the line up who were capable of producing magic deliveries......Even Gilespee in his prime when he was quick. Similarly Pollock had Donald initially and then Ntini who were express bowlers. Steyn is also a consistent bowler because Morkel on the other end can rough up batsmen. Courtney Walsh had Ambrose,Patterson,Bishop which helped him take buckets of wickets with that consistent line. Take a look at Ishant right now he is confused to bowl an attacking line or defensive line due to lack of support........RP,Sree and even Ishant benefitted when they were playing with Zak for a reason. There is no clash between a quick bowler and a steady or consistent bowler. Pacers like Donald and Morkel were / are very steady and consistent with their line and length. Ambrose was one of the most accurate pacers in the history of test cricket. Even if your role in the team is to rough-up batsmen with pace and bounce match after match, you need to be very consistent with your line and length. I am yet to see a really top quality pace bowler, no matter how quick, who is not consistent or steady with his line and length. In a match situation, a bowler must try what he has practiced a lot and can repeat with a certain regularity. Akram was a great bowler because he could bowl those swinging yorkers ball after ball and innings after innings. One magical spell and 20 bad innings after that would not make a bowler international class. Lots and lots of practice , a realistic assessment of one's own ability and a clear game-plan is required while bowling. The fact that support from the other end helps is a no-brainer and does not merit discussion. Support from the other end comes only when all the bowlers try to be consistent and bowl with a discipline and game-plan. If the role of a pacer is to soften the batsmen with pace and bounce then he should practice doing that day in and day out and then implement it in a match with consistency. We have been seeing a lot of green pitches at domestic cricket in last few years and result is trundlers blooming. A bowler doesnt have to do much on such pitches just put the ball there and pitch will do the rest. You do not want this to happen. We dont want soft grass lawns but pitches which are hard and provided good bounce. Even they have grass, pitch should be hard.

If you provide the wickets I am mentioning even trundlers will get wickets. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that. Also I have no issues with hard surfaces as long as there is more than enough green grass on it. Offcourse, It will even help the trundlers, But if we can provide such pitches to 25-50% domestic competitive games and develop this at school level, there will be massive difference in our fast bowling mindset. They will not try too much or develop injury in process. For example, I play in a league where team top of the league is made up of mostly first generation Indians. They consistently score around 230 in each game and bowl out opposition. When they came to play us on our ground they couldn't get more than 3-4 wickets and were happy to restrict us under 200, but then were all out at less than 110. And we give similar wicket to everyone and have only lost once this season. All our pacers have confidence bowling on that pitch that we will take wickets. So we generally bowl very good line. Our Teen players become faster every year. Edited July 8, 2016 by mishra
mishra Posted July 8, 2016 Posted July 8, 2016 ^ Also because of above our wicket taking ability have massively improved as season has progressed even when we are visiting other teams

Umesh looked like a much better bowler, in the last test against South Africa, when he did this. He was accurate while bowling 140 k to 150 k and got reverse swing too. Did not bowl too many loose deliveries. If Umesh and Aaron can become consistent , while maintaining their pace , then they can be a force to reckon with in test matches. Another issue that should be worked on is practicing to bounce the ball steeper, especially for Umesh and , to some extent, Shami. ( Shami and Bhuvi have actually improved their ability to bounce the ball steeper in the recent past. ) Ankit_sharma03, Mosher and tweaker 3

Rightarmfast Posted July 9, 2016 Posted July 9, 2016 There's a lot more to it than just ability, selectors, pitches etc. The answer is not a simple one as to why Indian pacers are not generally a success. A lot of seniors like even Imran Khan and the likes have said Indians dont have the built and the power. Well, if that was true, how come Vijendra Singh and Mary Kom were boxing world champions? Thats a whole lot of BS. To be the world's best, one has to consistently work towards it, and also believe that he will be or he is the best. One has to have the will to bowl faster and faster. I don't believe the Indian bowlers have that. They come for a few seasons, bowl at 140+ and then earn money and then lose focus. If you look at bowlers like Akram, Mcgrath, they were not world beaters or worlds fastest when they came. But they worked towards it consistently. I think only Zaheer Khan had that intent. Also, the lack of role models is a prime reason. Add to it, the mediocre trainers that we have in India with Indian mindset. The work culture is wrong. And these coaches genuinely believe one must bowl line and length and not fast. Look at this video, listen to it from 6:30 to 7:30. If these kids know that our coaches only want them to bowl line and length, you can imagine the rot in the system. How can you expect to have a genuine fast world class bowler? Not to forget regressive captains like MSD who loves ridiculing bowlers for trying to bowl fast! express bowling, Mosher and tweaker 3

Not to forget regressive captains like MSD who loves ridiculing bowlers for trying to bowl fast! You have pointed out many valid issues bro. Indians have done well in sports which depend a lot on power, strength etc. like wrestling, weightlifting , boxing etc. So, it is not a question of that. Now, we are seeing quite a few pacers bowling quick. It is a matter of lack of pace bowling culture, lack of role models and not wanting to be bowlers as a nation. We just love our batting. We must create an interest in the art of bowling as well as bowling quick. Provide extra incentive to good bowlers to bring about a bowling culture in our country. Pacers must be encouraged to bowl with effort and bowl with pace and bounce. They will then have to practice bowling consistently and bowl to a plan without losing any pace and bounce. They must be made to realize that there is no conflict between bowling consistently and bowling quick. ( Starc is a good contemporary example ) Now that we are getting some quick bowlers.....It is time to take our pace bowling to the next level....of consistent bowling at pace and with bounce. Choosing medium pacers will be a step backwards. There are some new guys like Nathu Singh, Ankit Rajpoot, Avesh Khan who may have pace as well as consistency. Bumrah is another such bowler. Ishant has improved in tests. Shami does well in ODIs. I am hopeful. Edited July 9, 2016 by express bowling Rightarmfast and tweaker 2
