fineleg Posted August 3, 2016 Posted August 3, 2016 (edited) Two things needed for Team India to become wonderfully competitive overseas under Virat Kohli: 1. A genuine medium-pace all-rounder (not Stuart Binny or Rishi Dhawan pls!) 2. A quality wk-batsman after MSD I think the other 9 out of 11 spots have decent candidates available. Need to drop S. Dhawan, and keep an alternate for ChePu if he does not click overseas. We have a complete dearth of #1 and #2 above? No one in domestics? Edited August 3, 2016 by fineleg tweaker 1

rkt.india Posted August 3, 2016 Posted August 3, 2016 (edited) An alrounder need not to be only a medium pace bowler. Ashwin is the genuine alrounder we have. Averaging 33 with the bat, 25 with the ball. Edited August 3, 2016 by rkt.india tweaker 1

Bleed-Blue Posted August 3, 2016 Posted August 3, 2016 Tbf i rather just have specialist fast bowlers, its hard enough job as it is. Besides these fast bowling all rounders we speak of generally end up being bit and pieces players like binny. tweaker and Mosher 2
fineleg Posted August 3, 2016 Author Posted August 3, 2016 (edited) @rkt.india R. Ashwin is a decent batsman under some conditions and when he is in form. But he is not an all-rounder like Ravi Shastri (forget Kapil Dev). He is a bowler who can bat in some conditions. He will be exposed in bowling friendly conditions. We need a genuine bowling allrounder who can hold his spot for batting as well - like Ravi Shastri or Kapil. (and preferably a seam bowling one for away tours). They can hold the spot in team for batting (even if bowling form weakens temporarily) Edited August 3, 2016 by fineleg Ankit_sharma03 1

Ill add we need two good batsman as well 1. there is huge question mark on pujara. He failed in overseas and also looks short on confidence. His going inside the shell theory wont work against quality bowling lineups. 2. At times on bowler friendly pitches there would be a need to play 6 batsman and we have Rohit. Coming A-tour would be crucial in that regard as to how Nair, Pandey n Iyer perform. 3. Even if Pujara comes good there is always a need for backups in case of injuries . tweaker 1
Mosher Posted August 3, 2016 Posted August 3, 2016 (edited) Those who follow domestic cricket any upcoming decent medium pacer AR's? Though BK is more of a bowler who can bat a bit, he has the potential to be a decent AR in tests. He is a much better option than Binny. Edited August 3, 2016 by Mosher tweaker 1
express bowling Posted August 3, 2016 Posted August 3, 2016 (edited) Rishabh Pant is our best hope for a wicket-keeper batsman when he becomes ready for international cricket. He is both a proper wicket-keeper and a very good batsman. His aggressive gameplay will be ideal for a no.6 batter. I would really like us to find a batsman-spinner. Someone who can bat at no.6 and bowl decent spin. This will be needed in Asia and slower pitches like is often found in WI. Anyone is aware of such a batter in domestic cricket who has international potential ? While playing in Australia, England, SA and NZ...someone like a Vijay Shankar can be played at no.6 and he can be the 4th seamer. Ashwin can be the only spinner then. Shankar is a proper batsman and can bowl medium-pace. Edited August 3, 2016 by express bowling Mosher 1

We need a bowling alrounder which Ashwin is like Kapil and Shastri. Shashtri averages 35 in test cricket which is not great and 40 with the ball. Bowling alrounders do not hold their place for batting. Neither Kapil nor Shashtri could have hold their places with batting only. Bowling alrounder makes his place for his bowling. There are 2 types of alrounder a bowler who can and a batsman who can bowl. You probably want a batting alounder if you are asking someone who can hold his place on his batting alone./ Edited August 3, 2016 by rkt.india
rkt.india Posted August 3, 2016 Posted August 3, 2016 Actually, we need a batting alrounder either pace or spin who can bat at 6 and bowl some good overs. One more guy who we can keep an eye on is Shreyas Gopal. He used to be a top order batsman in his U19 and U22 days and is a leg spinner too. Has 3 hundreds in FC despite mostly batting in lower order.

KS bharat is one guy who i liked and he opens as well so believe he would have a compact technique if not atleast better than most. But currently Naman ojha looks to be the best option. Pant debut at test level looks a distant dream right now. We have 1 yr and half before Sa tour but anyone coming in picture till that time looks like a miracle. Batsman-spinner 1. Deepak hooda- The guy can bat well, i dont why he doesnt take his bowling seriously. Bowls really less in domestic which wont help him develop his bowling. And ashwin being our main spinner makes his case as an off spinner not much of use. 2. Shreyas Gopal - IF this guy work really really hard on his batting , his leg spin can be a huge huge asset of Indian team. 3. Manoj Tiwary- Ok the most craziest option of mine. He is someone who can be really hand in India. His leg spin has been rewarding at time and he is an old domestic player who plays spin really well unlilke our main batsman these days. At 6 he might be an intersting option on rank turners. He is also an excellent fielder. Overseas i have no faith in his batting against pace. But i dont see him getting a chance. 4. Axar patel - I feel he can bat but has to improve his batting a lot . Good thing is he is in Mix . 5. Krunal pandya- Is someone with his pacy darter can be destructive with ball on rank turners and with bat can take game away in no time . Against Pace in overseas m not sure about his batting neither his bowling 6. Yuvraj singh- The ship sailed away long time back 7. Gurkeerat- Just didnt step up his game 8. Parvez rasool- His batting has improved a lot and bowling gone down, again with ashwin there 2 off spinner that to in overseas might not be a great option. Also looks off selectors radar. 9.Raina- Hahahahahahahahahaha......... 10. Rohit- In his dreams he is muralitharan with bowl and bradman with bat. I have seen Vijay shankar and some how makes me feel he will struggle against balls that are pitched up, specially Sa n eng bowlers would get him out LBW a lot. His bowling i have heard he is a 110-120k bowler but m not so sure about it. In such scenario if there is someone that India misses most is ganguly and ruin that Irfan and yuvi have lost it.

Apart from Vijay Shankar, is there any other proper batsman-seamer ? Abhishek Nayar is another such player but don't really know whether he can play international pace. Among the serious names that you mentioned, Hooda, Rasool and Axar Patel are not good enough to bat at no. 6 in test matches. Manoj Tiwary is a proper batsman who can bowl leg-spin. He averages 53 in FC but not really sure how good his bowling is. Krunal Pandya is very raw for the 5-day format. Unless he plays a couple of years of FC, he won't develop. But, someone to keep an eye on. Gopal averages just 35 in FC. Now, numbers are not everything and it is possible that he has improved recently. Gurkeerat's bowling is too friendly for test matches. Ashwin is regarded a better Test bowler and better Test batsman than Bhuvi.. So how is Bhuvi the best option for an all-rounder? Both are bowlers who can bat a bit.. I'd put Ashwin a bit closer to the all-rounder spot, given the three hundreds he has scored, though against WI, one of them overseas.. And some good innings he played in Australia.. He is untested in England though where Bhuvi scored a few runs.
