Is Shami our best pacer in last few years?

58 test wickets in 15 matches. Average is not impressive, but he is picking wickets consistently. He has got pace and can bowl with both new and old ball.

 

ODI record is very impressive and he is in race to fastest to 100 wickets

Yes ,he has been our best pacer & the good thing is that he has not dropped his pace even after his injuries.

Shami is the only all-condition fast-bowler we have. He has pace, has improved his bounce a lot, gets small movements on both sides, bowls in decent areas and knows how to set-up batsmen.  Has a good bouncer and an ok yorker and can bowl with the old ball and the new ball.

 

In some spells he gives a boundary ball every now and then and this aspect needs improvement. He had an issue with stamina too but has improved this aspect quite a bit  after returning from injury.

 

In test matches he has almost 4 wickets per test and SR of 55  and that is quite good.  His average of 33 needs improvement.

 

In ODIs, he is definitely our best bowler , with 87 wickets from 47 matches and an average of 24. That is very impressive.

 

He has been disappointing in T20s though.

 

He still needs to improve a lot if he wants to become a top international bowler, and not just best among Indians.

Doesn't matter if he sucks at T20s. Performing in ODIs and Tests is all we need as we don't play many T20 matches. 

 

Bumrah is 2nd pacer who can bowl in 2 formats (ODIs and T20s)

His high ER in test cricket hurts his average. Needs to work on conceding less runs.

In the midst of a good over he very often gives a boundary ball.   Needs to eliminate this.

The big issue I have with Shami is what is his real age? Is certainly not 26 as his official profile suggests. Might be 31-32. Probably has 2-3 years more to give before injuries really catch up with him.

The way i see it india should do a bone test to determine how old Shami really is. There is no point in playing him in a test match v Bangladesh for eg.

 

Handle with care thats all I will say. Use him wisely. Quite frankly avoid from playing him in needless odi and t20 series.

More like 28-29. 5-6 years would be too many.

He can play at least 30-40 tests.

Strike rate is more important than average, if we have to pick between the two stats. He definitely has to improve his average though.

Munaf Patel lost pace after 2 years, we thought it was because he is lazy, but now we know it was partially because of age.  If a hardworking bowler loses pace at 34 then a lazy one may lose it at 32, which Munaf actually was at that time.

 

Shami has actually gained pace after 3 years, and that does not happen at 30.  He should not be more than 27 or 28 but is one of those guys who looks older.

Best LOI bowler for sure by that not just fast bowler but overa our best LOI bowler but in tests not so much
