The overpopulation factor is used as a bit of a scarecrow in mass media. The real threat is abysmal levels of investment in health and education, factors that keep our people from achieving their true potential. People are always an asset, never a liability. As for comparisons with China, India has a larger area of arable land despite its small size?

Just imagine if Indian farming sector were as productive and resource efficient as Israel, we'd be exporting agri produce several times than we consume. For what it's worth, population density in India is less than or equal to some of the most idealized nation states such as Holland and Japan.

You made some good points. However, overpopulation is the root cause esp for a country that has limited resources / limited capability to realize its complete potential

For e.g. if the population is less, less number of health and education facilities would be required leading to eventually better overall facilities due to relatively more money spent per facility. Say X has $5k to spend on airline tickets. If he is alone, he could probably fly business. If he has to share that with say 3 people, he would have to fly economy

Relatively speaking less population = more resources per citizen = relatively higher quality of citizens = improved productivity and efficiency

I think overpopulation was an issue before, but pre-2000 there is technology available to help with a lot of problems related to over population, especially regarding increasing agriculture production, we still have people tilling tiny plots using cows.

As @sarchasm mentioned, state governments need to invest heavily in quality healthcare, nutrition and education.

It is embarrassing Infia doesn't have a university in world top 100.

The quality of wider education in India is pathetic, if a country can not churn out even average quality graduates then no amount of foreign and government investment will improve things.

The success of Japan, South Korea and Singapore was built on education, education and education (world class education).

A lot of analyst talk about skipping the industrialisation stage and going straight into a service sector led growth and development, well that will be even harder because the quality graduates will need to be even better.

Even on standardised global maths test for school students, India don't even feature in the overall table. I think even likes of Brazil and Mexico are ahead of Indian students

Those are mostly the side impact of overpopulation as Ind does not have unlimited resources.

Say you have $1M to spend on education infrastructure. For that amount, say a world class facility for 1K students can be built. But say Ind has 10K students to support and it is very difficult to come up with $10M, so the likely decision would be to use $1M for 10K students and on compromised facilities .... Now this 10K students would have decent education but not world class. And say this somehow impacts productivity. Less productivity leads to relatively lower revenues, and thus less $ for re-investment. On the other hand, the population keeps raising .... And somehow when you have $10M, the country would need to support say 50K students, so again the money would be spent on compromised facilities .... it is a vicious cycle

^ Assuming that is a family caught in a vicious cycle (over population combined with limited resources) .... extend the above to the country level and that is Ind struggling with over population

PS the guy is wearing helmet but what about the others? If you lack money to even provide others in your family with helmets for safety (forget about decent transportation), why raise such a large family? :hitler:

Over population is not that big a problem.....but we are not over populated. We are ripping at the seams. We are far two many.

Before highways are completed, there are people encroaching .

The By passes need bypasses.

We have Australia's  population added to our population every year. WTH!!!

We are just too many. And the problem is not going to go away because the most important job that an adult is expected to do is get married and produced more children.

Where I am ...there are  hospitals in all directions ....but still the lines are never ending.

How many freaking hospitals can be built...how many freaking beds ...how many freaking new humans do we need to keep adding?

Why can't bloody in -laws and parents shut the hell up  about"bacche bache bache bache"

We are a nation obsessed with reproduction. We deserve this shit.

Thank God for all the people who move out to greener pastures....

wow look at Saudi's PPP GDP per Capita, 2nd best in that list, much higher than EU and Canada and their HDI is a respectable 0.837

i am surprised at that, must be all the heavily subsidised goods and services there.

The problem is population is like a trap , once you are in then only some massive tragedy can the you out. China now has abandoned 1 child policy. they are worried about their aging  population. The problem is it is the younger population that take care of old and non productive population. If young people stop or produce less kids then after 20-30 years there will massive shortage of  working population and old people will be dying without care everwhere

With petro dollars rolling in from all corners, I guess, the govt can afford to subsidize

maybe that's where a hardline needs be taken, invest the $1m in a world class facility for the 1K students, the remaining 9K should be nudged to go into apprentice roles. I believe Modi is keen on the apprentice routes and sees it as important route to skill up the nation at a low cost. And apprenticeships doesn't necessarily mean industrial jobs, apprenticeship roles also exist in the service sector.

Even the IITs are not world class, and then the Nalanda University fiasco doesn't give confidence that India central and state governments can even produce world class education facilities.  And the results are there for all to see, e.g. poor quality engineers -> we have to deal with shoddy roads, over-bridges collapsing, no ability to build sky scrapers, pathetic building services (plumbing, electrical wiring, etc.), despite having an indigenous civil nuclear program we import foreign (Russian and now American) reactors.

Engineering is one example, but this mediocrity across all sectors.

With overpopulation, time for more ruthlessness to produce quality than just sustaining oneself with mediocrity, and hopefully that quality pays off; who will be more productive, raising revenues, more investments, and opportunities to expand education....reverse the vicious cycle.

Solution batao.Europeans and other developed nations just import truck load of young people to do menial jobs . What wil India do if Indians have very few kids?

It is about striking the right balance. You are posting as if there is a choice b/w being over-populated or under-populated.

Let's not forget that over-population leads to degradation of environment, a curse for future generations. It is the responsibility of the current generation to preserve environment for future generations

Are you implying that we have to burden the planet so our menial jobs can be done?

India is overpopulated in comparison to the world population density. India has arable land, but very little perennial water source with the impending water crisis it would be a spectacle. Solution is for more and more people to leave India and settle-down in other immigrant friendly countries and bring population control measures. In India everyone gets hitched and its easy( relatively cheap as well) to have and raise a baby, may be this needs to be changed.
