Dhawan has a high SR ( 60 )  in test matches and that is causing a problem regarding his permanent removal as he is perceived as a good foil to the slower Vijay and no. 3  Pujara.   Having a  viable option is important and KL Rahul is providing that now.

This thread is proof of how flawed our thinking is for cricket. We don't need to give chances to the next YOUNGESTER who is promising,we need to give chances to ANYONE who is doing well for a season or two. Don't care if that guy is 19, 25 or 35 years old. The day Indian fans will value performance and the ability to play even 2-3 years on merit over 'we want the next batting/bowling sensation, so chances must be given to high-flying youngsters only' is the day we will see real progress.

I would add to this that we need to include players who have international potential  +  who have been doing well consistently in the more competitive FC matches....

• Board President's XI matches and other matches against touring international sides
• A-team games against strong nations.
• Duleep Trophy and  Deodhar Trophy matches which feature India Red, Green, Blue consisting of the best players from India.
• Irani Trophy featuring Ranji Champions and the Rest of India.
• Finals and semi finals of Ranji Trophy / Vijay Hazare / SMA Trophy etc.
• Any other Ranji, VH, SMA games which have strong teams as opposition.

The league games of Ranji Trophy, Vijay Hazare Trophy ( List A ) and SMA Trophy ( T20 ) usually have weak  or very weak  oppositions and performances there are often misleading.

A-team away games against strong nations should get lot of value. And Manish Pandey is the one who deserves a chance currently. Shreyas Iyer and Karun Nayar have disappointed. Sanju Samson too sorta disappointing. But Manish Pandey needs to replace Rohit Sharma in Test squad.

Agreed.  Timing of selection is crucial.  Am just afraid they'll keep procrastinating on picking him; he'll lose his form, confidence and motivation and slip into obscurity.  Then, they'll pick him, setting him up for failure.  

 

Unless he has some glaring technical flaw (like Raina) that would prevent him from becoming a good test batsman, he should be drafted now and given an opportunity soon.

Sanju Samson has done decently on this A tour.  

 

In the one day games, he scored a 54 and a 87 in a large chase at a high SR ..... and failed 2 times.

 

In the 4 day game, he failed in the first innings along with all the other batsmen....but in the second innings he batted quite confidently for  a 34 not out with his team in trouble.   He handled bounce well and was moving his feet decisively.

 

Manish Pandey has been very impressive in the one day games and his inclusion in the ODI team should be a no-brainer.  However, in the 4 day games, he failed 3 times and scored a 77.  Got out trying to slog 2 times. Not sure he is the ideal person for test matches as of now.

Manish Pandey has talent n potential n will be a KL Rahul kinda contributor, he does t have any big technical issues, can win games on his own also he seems to favor one area more, mid wkt, n needs to work on all around game

There is a fine balance between giving a player his due chances and persisting for too long. Our selectors generally end up erring on the latter. Just take the case of Ishant Sharma, a bowler with a brain the size of a pea. What more? They made him believe that he is the spearhead of the bowling attack. 

 

In this team, we should have picked Sheldon Jackson and Kuldeep Yadav in place of Dhawan and Ishant
