Have domestic triple hundreds lost their significance?

Ravindra Jadeja, who has not one, not two, but three First Class triple hundreds, cannot even average 25 with the bat after 20 Tests. These days, I see triple hundreds being scored left, right and center.

So, the question is - is making huge scores in an innings such as a triple hundred even significant any more? A triple hundred in a First Class game should signify some serious batting capability, but all it seems to indicate is that the opposing bowling attack was toothless under the conditions and the batsman who got there just ground out the hapless bowlers. There was no real contest between bat and ball. Even players with moderate to low batting skills are getting 300s.

Any achievement in domestics always need to be viewed with a 60% filter. Coz domestics is domestics. It is not international class opposition. A-tour (away) games carry more weightage.

first tell me how many triple hundreds have been scored in last 10 years in our domestic cricket?

Not sure about exact details, but there were two in the MH-Delhi match (only the second time in FC history that there were two 300s in same match) and a third one (Bawne) could have got there had MH not declared. 3 x 300s for Jadeja, 3 more for Pujara. Only 9 batsmen in the history of cricket have scored 3 x 300s in FC cricket.

i dont think many triple hundreds have been scored in domestic cricket in last 5-10 years. Conditions have been rather bowling friendly.

Thanks. That does seem to validate that we have had far too many in the last 10 years.

A 19 year old smashing a 300 is still unbelievable.....so it depends...but yes Jadeja having 3 300's is a blot on our domestics

I still want to see Jadeja be given some responsibility in the batting order before I would say he can't bat. I feel like we only send him in for quick runs and don't really see if he can bat in difficult situations. He may not be good, but I am not sure yet. His triple hundreds say that he at least has some temperament to play a longish innings.

We should send some of our weaker batsmen up the order in small chases to  see if they are capable.

Jadeja has played 20 tests and pretty much all of them have been low scoring result oriented affairs where he gor plenty of opportunities to bat...He has 31 innings in tests and most of them he has batted at 7 where he got ample opportunities to bat long

Sure, but I am talking more about how he is asked to play. He is always supposed to slog/be aggressive as soon as he gets in to bat. He would usually come in after Dhoni, and the two would start playing shots. Even in the IPL, he isn't some great boundary hitter.

I just think that they should ask him to play an actual batting innings instead of going for quick runs. Promote him up the order once or twice, like Ashwin got promoted, before we give up on his batting ability. I'm not saying he will be good, but I just want to see.

I  think we have to take the 300+ scores on a case to case basis to judge their importance.

Quality of opposition bowlers, pitch on which it was scored, experience and age of the batsman, scores by other batters of his team etc. would help us determine that.

In case of  Pant's 300+....his young age and the fact that he was playing his 3rd FC match, does add  something extra to this huge score.  It is not easy to graduate to the next level with such a spectacular knock.  Another interesting fact is that the next highest score for Delhi was only 71 in that innings although the opposition had two large individual scores.

You do have a point. But, to implement this .....Jadeja needs to work on his 2 major weaknesses     a)  Tacking the short rising ball     b)  Playing deliveries outside the off-stump. He tries to play at too many deliveries and also plays them with a sliced bat which often results in catches.

Pant 300+ is little more valuable as it is in the second innings.... when there is a score board pressure...

What impresses me his strike rate....he is a natural stroke-maker and would be perfect ODI material

If it were just one, you could write it off as a fluke. After all, even Jason Gillespie has a test double hundred to his name. But sir has 3 triples to his name, which imply he is a capable batsman. Given those lofty numbers one would think he would have scored a century or two in tests by now. It is sad that he is just slightly above tailender level. And yes, his lack of batting success does cheapen other domestic triple centuries as well. It poses a dilemma for selectors in rating the true caliber of a player. Providing a good balance of power between bat and ball is the only way to weed out such anomalies.

I was not really referring to Pant in this post. Yes, I completely agree with you on Pant - getting a 300 in just his third match and that too at the SR that he scored at (almost Sehwag like). I am actually one of those who thinks Pant should be immediately picked in the T20 team to plan for the 2018 World T20.

I agree that a case by case analysis is called for here.

Before Ashwin got promoted, Jadeja was always batting ahead of Ashwin. It was because of lack of runs and more importantly technical deficiencies in Jadeja's batting that caused Kohli as captain to get Ashwin to bat higher than Jadeja. Ashwin's FC batting average of 34 is almost identical to his Test average of 33. Ashwin got his first Test hundred in only his third innings and that too, batting at 8. Jadeja has got plenty of opportunities with the bat so far, so there cannot be any excuses. Hopefully he has learnt from them and can turn around his Test batting form and justify his FC records.

The track was quite flat - the opposition also did well. Same goes for Hood's 293.

He has turned it around already... from being a decent No.7/8 to now becoming a genuine No.9/10.
