No X factor in the side( promise no Rohit Sharma reference)

I felt India is looking to take the test tracks back to 2008-09 level where home batsmen can excel and away batsmen find it tough anyway. It clearly hasn't worked this test..

If anything the ODI side lacks the X factor . Test team needs some small tweaks , like a good young WK batsmen and Rahul to replace GG . Otherwise we have most things covered .

If that's the case , they picked the wrong series ...we are giving England a chance here .

Just one test guys. This a new venue remember? They are hosting a 5 day game for the first time ever. Second test also could be a bit like this with Vizag being another new venue. Wait till the last three tests. The last three will be like complete different pitches which will be big test for the England bats.

Kohli batting uncharacteristically slow in this match even after getting set.

 

Rahane getting out quickly.

 

Not having a new-age No.6 batsman in test matches -- who can dominate the bowlers from the start.

 

These factors have contributed to our batting looking  under pressure and without purpose in this test for some parts of our innings..

 

If we have Rahul back, Kohli batting like he usually does and a new age aggressive  No.6 batsman in the team...our test batting will look fine and balanced.

 

So, only minor tweaks are needed.

Not Rohit...as he bats slowly in test matches and has a low average too.

 

I am hoping that we will get a new-age aggressive batsman in.   Preferably a batting all-rounder or batsman-keeper.  Someone young.

could be nair... heard about him very good player of spin , plays at decent strike rate in ipl too

Nair has a SR of 50 in FC.

 

Not sure he is ideal for the No. 6 slot 

 

As a long term No.6,  I am hoping for a  high average and high SR batsman with ability to either bowl or keep.   Not easy to find but would a  batsmen like Pant or someone else be ready for this role in the next 14 months  ?      ( the time by which the next Ranji season ends  )   Or can Pandya become a more consistent batsman  ?

I see only 3 batsman who are doing that in domestic (high avg high SR )  rohit, KL rahul and sheldon jackson
and pant is very raw playing his first season only

4 such batsmen would be Rishabh Pant, Deepak Hooda, Shreyas Iyer and Gurkeerat  Mann.

 

Not saying they are test class though.  Not enough FC matches are televised and only the selectors can say whether these guys are good enough batters for test matches.

Selectors just recycle the same old on a rinse and repeat cycle, show zero imagination when it comes to younger players.

The problem is we have already given Eng some momentum with this test , if England bats first in the next test and posts a decent total , we will be under a lot of pressure

Also , we should not be talking about SR's in Test matches ...Viru was a freak , a uniq case where is SR made a big difference . Othrwise it makes little differnce if batsmen bat at Sr of 45 of 55 .

Not talking about S/R's only as a criteria here....Let us take likes of Ali,Stokes,Woakes etc. for example here,they can come in at 150/5 and still take the game away from the opposition by playing attacking cricket,at the same time they can play the sedate innings to save games or normal innings to build a partnership/lead etc.

 

Stokes can reverse swing the ball and get crucial breakthroughs even though he is the 5th and sometimes 6th bowler for his side.

 

Australia is similar like India too,too many one dimensional players except Warner who can take the game away or maybe to some extent Starc(in tests)-even though Starc is the xfactor in the LOI side.

 

South Africa have AB and Dekock.

 

We seem to have too many players in just 1 gear.

 

The Kohli's chase in adelaide is one such example where he created doubts for the opposition but it is still just 1 instance and he might be the only player in the side who is capable of forcing things.

 

I am nto advocating to have Maxwells and Afridis of the world in the test side but we just don't seem to have the players who can take their game to the next level.

 

If we have to save a game...I will back Vijay,Rahane,Pujara and even Gambhir but none of them can really counterattack. Pujara played a wonderful innings in this test in the 1st innings,that is more like it.

I dont think the issue is with batsmen who are in the linup , with Vijay,Rahane,Pujara and Virat there is no reason we cannot counter attack . Virats Adelaide chase is one off though , cos the need to play such innings is rare . 

We have batsmen capable of doing that , but bat freely we need better balance .

 

you cannot counter attack with 5 batsmen and saha as your keeper-bat . so either play 6 genuine bats , or get a attacking wk-bat or pace bowling AR .

Tendulkar has played counter attacking innings in South Africa and Australia with way worse teams...it is not always about flashiness though.

 

If our team is 150/5 we will 9/10 times be bundled out within 250....if opposition is 200/1...9/10 times they will end up with a score of 550/4 decl...that is all I am saying,we are way too predictable.

 

Now obviously I don't want us to be "unpredictable' like Pak or Westindies but you get my point.

 

Please don't bringup the Ashwin/Saha partnership against WI...they will not be able to replicate that against top quality attacks

yes I forgot Iyer. my bad ... but hooda and gurkeerat are odi players...like raina...they can play test cricket only when they do very well in odis first

Hooda has been doing very  well in Ranji this year.   Already scored 3 centuries with a highest of 290+.

 

We have to see whether  he has improved his technique in the 4-day games.  I am eagerly waiting for the time when Ranji matches will be televised this year.
