Is Nair the one for a long haul?

Rahul is the God of inconsistency (last 5 innings is too low a sample size)

Vijay is inconsistent and frankly unpredictable these days. Had he shown the same application this home season that he exhibited in the overseas tours he would have scored 1500 runs, even more than Pujara. He has forgotten how to leave the ball and how to play short pitch deliveries. Also the frequent lapses in concentration is irritating.

Pujara is consistently the best batsman in Asia but inconsistent overseas, Rahane viceversa.

Kohli, when he goes missing really goes missing, England 2014 and now this. Contrast him to 90s Tendulkar who didn't fail in a single series for 10 years in the strongest era of bowling.

Saha, Ashwin, Jadeja too are inconsistent with the bat.

And I don't want to even talk about Rohit Sharma, he is useless. 

This is a different kind of inconsistency.

 

Rahul was boom or bust. He busted a lot but he boomed a lot too.

Vijay is inconsistent but compared to his potential and ability. Plus he doesn't carry on when he should.

Kohli is inconsistent in Asia (when you take his career) but prior to this series, he scored heavily in Eng series, scored double century in NZ series, scored the crucial 40 in NZ series.

Never considered Ashwin a pure bat. He is inconsistent.

 

Now if we take Nair, here are his scored in the last 13 innings:

 

4, 13, 303*, 12, 14, 28, 7, 14, 12, 4, 0, 26, 23

 

Out of these 13 innings, 6 have been in domestics.

 

Add to that, I heard he didn't score well in the recent A tours.

 

Seems like a gun player of spin but his game against pace is unsure (wghich is of paramount importance with the overseas leg coming up). Inconsistency and poor A tour results don't bode well.

Yes, very inconsistent. His Aus A tour scores in 2016 were 15, 21, 1, 1 averaging 9.5. Even Jayant Yadav (averaged 42.5) and Hardik Pandya (average 28.6) scored more than him as allrounders.

 

I feel he is very suspect against good quality pace bowling.

Possibly. But the difference is overseas Rahane is our best bat, but Nair is no way even our top 3 best bat in India.

He may develop into one with few more matches. Looked good even on that Bengaluru pitch until he got out.

Yeah, seems a good player of spin, so can be played at home. But for overseas he will have to start scoring in A tours.

3 failures since the 300, frustrating, he is weak mentally and not a clutch player. loose play against a bowler who go pujara as well. Rope is v short, talunt will replace him soon.

They had the guts and gumption to drop him after 300 and now giving him the long rope. He seems totally useless for overseas as he has problems with fast deliveries both spin and fast bowling

We need to develop more all-condition players, be it batsmen or pacers or spinners.

That's not law of average. More like an aberration with one big score.

Atleast rohit would would make 50s when india were in trouble. Heck even amit mishra would make some 50s down the order once  in a while. This guy has done nothing after the triple or before. Not to mention his terrible fielding.

He was struggling to put bat to ball against Zimbabwean medium pacers bowling at 125-128

My main grouse with Nair is his catching, makes Kohli and Vijay look like Mark Waugh. I have seen him drop at least 6-8 catches in the few tests I have seen him play.

It would be a little risky to include likes of Nair in the playing 11 if Ind is only fielding 5 batting specialists, along with 5 bowlers
