Peter Handscomb's Test career is only three matches old, but he has already achieved a feat matched by few Australians. By scoring 54 on debut in Adelaide, 105 at the Gabba and 54 at the MCG, Handscomb became one of only five men to make a 50-plus score in each of his first three Tests for Australia. The only others to have done so are Bill Brown, Frank Iredale, Michael Bevan and Herbie Collins - Collins, in fact, did so in his fourth Test, too.

It is testament not only to Handscomb's skill as a batsman - although he has shown plenty of that since being handed his baggy green less than six weeks ago - but also to his temperament. At the crease as a Test batsman, Handscomb has appeared as unflustered as if he was playing a club game for St Kilda, a sign of the mental strength that others have observed in Handscomb since his teenage years.

But beyond this home summer - and whether or not Handscomb matches Collins' Australia record by making a 50-plus score in his fourth straight Test from debut - Australia hope that Handscomb can achieve another feat that few of his countrymen have managed. At least, few in recent years. That goal is to master the Indian conditions when Australia embark on a Test tour there next month, their first since being crushed 0-4 in 2013.

Interesting. Even though Rahane hasn't been good against spin in recent games, I still feel Rahane got it covered when it comes to spin. He has just had some bad run against spinners. I think he is a pretty good player against spin who is just has been trying to play too many shots of late which can happen to players who are in really good form. Rahane caught that bug and hence even when looking comfortable, he kept giving away his wicket to spinners by playing some weird shots.

 

Handscomb, if he can bring any maturity like Rahane, he can be a good find for Australia. Though he will have his work cut out with Ashwin and Jadeja waiting for the Feb series eagerly. Though copying Rahane is a step in great direction, as there is lot of discipline in Rahane's game which many cricketers lack today.

^Rahane has had his issues recently like I mentioned above, but isn't the worst player of spin. Yes, these Aussies exaggerate a bit but Rahane has scored plenty of runs against top Indian spinners in Ranji. His recent struggle to spin is more because of his mental game. He was in a really good form before NZ series and at times when you are in a really good form, you tend to play too many shots or think too much of what to play. This is where Rahane has actually given away his wicket to bowlers easily, especially spinners. His dismissals have shown that he was often in two minds to play a particular shot. This happened even against seamers while playing the short ball.

Rahane is the worst player of spin in this team and I am not saying this based on just England tests. He struggled big time against SA on turners at Mohali and nagpur, against NZ at Kanpur. He did score runs but on pitches which were largely flat or not that spin friendly.

I don't think he is that bad of a player against spin. May be you are analyzing a bit too much.

This a Sochi samjhi chala of Australia. If Rahane has any sense he would ignore what has been said of him and work a lot in the nets against spin.

Agree- I think rahanes first ever test match vs Australia  was also a very clear demonstration of how poor he was against spin.....since then I've been looking for clear evidence to overturn that judgment, but unfortunately the evidence has been progressively more damning
