Poor state of our domestic bowling

Right now the state of our domestic bowling does not fill me with confidence at all. Our Test bowling right now is not too bad but there doesn't seem to be lot of contenders and ready backups knocking on the doors. We are a couple of injuries away from really struggling and having an attack that falls behind almost all test teams. 

 

Look at the list of top wicket takers in Ranji this year. Only one I can see even getting close to playing for India is Kuldeep who is at #13 and maybe the leading guy Nadeem. http://stats.espncricinfo.com/ranji-trophy-2016-17/engine/records/bowling/most_wickets_career.html?id=11519;type=tournament

 

True Pacers who can exploit good bounce just remain a sideshow and their only hope is if they get noticed somehow and get some A games before they burn out. The list is filled with Medium pacers who can exploit green pitches and bad techniques. any of these guys would be shown up really badly at higher levels. 

 

Spinner situation looks better than a couple of years ago. Ashwin/Jadeja have improved and we have guys like Jayant and Kuldeep coming up. I have got tired of saying that for domestic grounds we need to have lot more bouncy pitches - that is the only way the pool of real pacers will improve as well as our spinners will learn to be better in foreign conditions.

As per selectors the next line of bowling attack includes Vinay Kumar,Dinda etc.

 

But we have lot of quality bowlers in the domestic circuit. Those who are very close are Shardul Thakur,Aaron,Sran,Kuldeep,Nadeem,Chahal.

 

Then there are promising bowlers who are not yet on selectors ' s radar are Nathu Singh,Rajpoot,Chaudhary, etc.

Selectors should have been brave & should have selected young pacers instead of Nehra & co

You are missing Mohd Siraj and CV Milind from the top 10, two fast bowlers. Both are certain India prospects.

Another decent prospect Lalit Yadav is there too, not in top 10 but has 30 wickets from 7 matches at 21.

Good to know that. I really hope they make the next step. I was watching Rahul shukla bowl in the Semifinals and thought here is a guy with so much natural ability to be bowling fast could not get ahead

Likes of Shukla have not learned the art of taking wickets regularly that is why he could not become regular for Jharkhand in Ranji trophy. I believe he lacking in motivation too.  He could not even bowl faster, 145, but consistent injuries have made him conscious and now he bowls within himself unlike Aaron who still tries to bowl as quick as possible. Both could similar pace once.

one of Gujarat I saw on TV..his speed was 122, 118..I dont know how teams are selecting such bowlers as new ball bowlers?

Our international pacers....Shami, Umesh, Ishant, Bhuvi, Pandya and Bumrah  are the best group of pacers we have got in our history.

 

First list backup of Shardul, Aaron and Sran are also promising.

 

Then we have Siraj, Nathu, Sangwan, Rajpoot, Aniket, Chama, Ravi Kiran, Avesh Khan, Lalit Yadav, Md. Sayyed, Amit Kuila etc. ....all can be international prospects.

 

We have seen all OUR  international pacers improve their accuracy and ability to hit the deck hard and get bounce.  Most of them always had movement and pace and now they are sustaining high pace too throughout the day.

 

The future looks bright on the pacers' front.

 

 

 

Our international  spinners Ashwin and Jadeja, are ideal for the subcontinent.

 

We are seeing promising wrist spinners coming up like Kuldeep and Gopal.  U19 spinners leggie Chahar and left-armer Abhishek Sharma are very talented too.

 

We have a captain and coach who want to support and develop bowlers.  Our bowling future looks bright.

I feel Sangwan will play for India as he is a left armers n can bowl to a plan n has pace n bowls goodish length plus can adjust his length also has good fitness n action n can bat as well also can seam the ball.

Sran is a good prospect n once fit he will be back, Nathu, Aniket, Ankit are good n ready to play as well.

Among A team options I see, M Siraj, Warrier, Avesh, Khalil , Chama, Natrajan n that should be the way not recycled failures n 30 year olds.

That was CT Gaja. He has got two top order wickets. I think Vinay bowls in low 130s and doesn't bowl 115 zooters.

Is this actually true? Can these guys win matches in Australia and trouble their top batsmen like the fast bowlers did in 08? I think we had basically this lineup in Aus tests (minus Bhumrah and Pandya) in 2014-15 and they got slaughtered. Couldnt't bowl out NZ despite a gigantic lead, and almost gave up 450+ in the 4th innings to SA, ended up escaping with a draw. We have won one test in Aus/NZ/England/SA in the last three years, so I am going to withhold judgement on exactly how good these current guys are.

Its not fully true untill they execute their performance and show consistency overseas and for over a period of time. Currently, Shami is the only consistent bowler in the Indian line up and Umesh, Bhuvi are good support bowlers. With Shami being injury prone, I won't call this attack the best attack right now. If one wants to make them feel happy, then fine to rate them the best ever, but we have to calculate their performance and how motivated and consistent they remain series to come.

 

We should be ready without Shami and be able to take twenty wickets if he is not available. Currently we have spinners who are doing the job at home, they might not be equally handy over seas, and that is when the real pressure will show on seamers where they will have to show wickets as it will be them whom we would be depending on to get us wickets. 

 

Too early to call them the best. Good prospects, not the best bowlers yet.

In the 07-08 tour to Australia, we lost 2 tests and won 1 test in  Perth. Our pacers were Ishant ( still present ), RP and Irfan. We typically tend to do well on juicier surfaces where our average pacers look better.  In 14-15 we did not play in Perth. But, in England '14, we won a test on a juicy pitch at Lords.

 

Our current bunch of pacers have improved their accuracy a lot,  along with ability to get bounce, in the last 6 or 7 months. They are not bowling in a similar manner to 2014. They anyway had pace and movement but the discipline was missing earlier.....which has now been added.

 

It is because of this reason that they are looking good as a group. Their ultimate test will obviously be on the away tours in 2017-18....but disciplined quick bowlers rarely do badly.

I agree that there are talented fast bowlers in the Ranji Trophy. The issue seems to be the selectors who seem happy selecting the same old, tired bowlers again and again. It's disappointing.

Right but we also won the one day series, and of our two losses one was that BS one in Sydney where frankly the Aussies cheated their way to a win. What I am saying is they were a more potent force collectively. Also you forgot Zaheer and Sreesanth in our list of pacers at the time. I know Sreesanth, RP Singh, and Ishant have all become jokes, but at the time all three were bowling well and making use of Aussie conditions. More importantly, they didn't bowl as many loose deliveries as our current crop do (specifically Umesh)

All this being said, I think our current crop can become the best group (and I certainly hope they do!) I agree that the only way to judge will be in 2017-18 when we tour abroad

We have a fast bowling culture now, in the mid and late '10s,  in  India. Pacers are sustaining the pace they started with and even improving on this front.  They are improving their accuracy too.  They are hitting the deck hard.  There are  new pacers coming up who are trying to do similar things.  There is a tendency to improve both individually and as a lot.   That is the main difference now.

 

In the late '00s, we had an ace pacer in Zaheer....and there were a few other very talented pacers too....Munaf, RP, Sreesanth, Pathan etc. But, due to the lack of fast bowling culture, most of them, lost motivation, lost pace and  faded away.

 

IMHO  this is the main difference between now and late '00s on the pacers' front.
