CA wants India to play two day-night Tests in Australia

India's tour of Australia in 2020-21 could become the first series ever to feature more than one day-night Test.

A Cricket Australia (CA) delegation, led by its chairman Earl Eddings, is set to meet the new BCCI administration on the sidelines of a limited-overs series in January with the question of day-night Tests fairly and squarely on the agenda.

With the MCG and SCG Tests set in stone as day matches played opposite the Big Bash League, this may likely mean the first two Tests - to be played in two of Adelaide, Brisbane and Perth - are both primed for the pink ball, especially given the better time slot for Indian broadcast audiences.

Negotiations have not yet begun, but "we'll mention that when we're over there in January talking during the one-day series," Eddings told ESPNcricinfo. "As you build that trust and build that relationship you have that chat.

"Pleasingly they've played their first day-night Test and won easily. Now they've got through that it might give them the right build-up to it over here. I've got no doubt they'll consider playing one and maybe even more day-night Test matches. But that's down the track to when we catch up with them in January."

Kevin Roberts, the CA chief executive, had earlier revealed the extent of the board's enthusiasm for floodlit matches against India during an interview with ABC Radio. When they asked how many pink-ball matches he would like to see next summer, he said, "in my heart I'd say four from four, in my head we'd love to play one of the four as a day-night Test."

After a domineering victory against Bangladesh in India's inaugural pink-ball Test in November, Indian captain Virat Kohli was asked about the prospect of one during the Australian tour next year. Kohli said he was "open to do anything" as long as there was a practice match under lights. Then on Sunday, BCCI president Sourav Ganguly said: "When we tour, we will deal as per the request of the [host] board". CA is set to make the ask now.

The other question surrounding next summer will be the exact timing of the Tests, either a more traditional schedule concluding with the SCG Test in the first week of January, or stretching further into 2021, as was the case in 2011-12 and 2007-08. Eddings indicated that CA would like, in future, to play five-Test series against India, as England now do.

"Still working through that, it's a normal tour in that they're playing four Test matches, we've got one against Afghanistan," he said. "Ideally we want to be playing five Tests against India, hopefully in the future we can do that as well."

Eddings wrote to Ganguly upon the announcement he had been named the new BCCI president, backed by a cadre of administrators including the former BCCI president and ICC chairman N Srinivasan. The complex dynamics of the BCCI are a key focus of Eddings as CA's chair, as demonstrated early in his job when the Indian board insisted that Australia play the ODI series in January, taking them away from home in the middle of a packed summer and pushing an ODI series against New Zealand into March.

"First of all I've congratulated Sourav and reached out to him," Eddings said. "The fact India are playing day-night Test cricket is a great thing. It shows that he cares about the game. We've exchanged letters, I'm going over there with some of our board members in early January for some of the ODIs where I hope to meet with the new BCCI administration. I want to stress we've got a very strong relationship with India, there's a lot of mutual respect there. While we have our differences because we've got different needs, the relationship is very strong."

Asked whether he was concerned that India's board may - now that it is free from Supreme Court control - look to dominate world cricket as it did before, Eddings was hopeful of a different approach this time.

"In my time being involved with the ICC we've had very good relationships - never been in that situation," he said. "So I'd like to think going forward everyone's got the best interests of the game at heart and we can maximise those opportunities for everybody. Doesn't mean we won't have our disagreements, but certainly in terms of what I've seen so far it's like anything, you build a relationship based on trust, you sit down, work through the issues and try to find some common ground.

"India's very generous, they rarely play many Test matches in their home summer because they're always travelling to support a lot of other countries. They're very cognisant of the importance they play in world cricket. I respect that enormously. If you look at international broadcasting for red-ball cricket, that's where the challenge is, getting international broadcasters to value that over some of the T20 competitions and the like."

We should play in Brisbane and try to breach their fortress...among their major venues we have won at SCG, MCG, WACA, Adelaide Oval...not at Gabba. But 1 D/N is enough methinks, probably Adelaide will get it...Afg will most likely play their test in Perth.

Just hope Kohli don't brainfart like in SAF and Eng. This is going to be our toughest Test series in 5 years.

True, Brisbane is their fortress but we haven't won in Sydney since 1978. Many people think that Sydney is our best chance of winning a test but it so happens that we have won only one test there. Melbourne last year and before that 1981 and 77 - 3 tests. India's victory over Aus in 77 in Melbourne was our first in Aus. Adelaide in 03 and last year - 2 tests. Perth in 08 - 1 tests. We had our chances in 77-78, 81 and 85-86 when Aus were at their weakest but we couldn't. 77-78 series our victories were huge and their victories were close yet they ended up winning the trophy 3-2.

Don't take them lightly. They must be hurting after the last series loss at their grounds. They will be looking to pay back come this series. England won in 2010 and they got shellacked in 2014 with Johnson and Harris tearing into them. Smith is a class apart but don't underestimate Warner and Lambushcagne. Khawaja is still there. Smith alone can tear us a new one dont forget that. He was a thorn in our flesh in the 2017 home series where Kohli flopped. Kohli and Pujara have to be our best batsmen to tackle their fast bowlers and Lyon

Vanquishing them in their fortress will be more fun, a true test for #1 test side. At SCG they have been more vulnerable over the years, it also provides some help for finger spinners and SC batsmen...with a but more luck we could have won there in '04, '08 and earlier this year. 

 

77-78 we played a side led by 42 yo Bob Simpson (who came out of retirement), all Packer rejects. Still would have crushed them had umpiring not been a farce

 

80-81- played very well to draw that series against a formidable Aussie team.

 

85-86- rain+umpiring saved them.

Don't think in this cycle. Maybe for future.

 

Hope we play just 1 test (SCG) there in 2021 because that year is packed with many imp assignments...home and away Eng, WTC F, NZ at home and start of RSA tour.

If it's going to be 5 match series (which i would love) then i think 2 day night matches are fine. It's not that aus is unbeatable in day night tests. If there is even bit help available for our bowlers then their batsman will be badly exposed but same can happen against us as well (exc virat).

A few guys like kohli, Rohit, Bumrah, Jadeja(?) will be in Australia for a month before the start of this series for the T20WC. 

 

I hope BCCI grows a brain and sends all other test specialists to Australia in this time frame to play shield teams or some PM 11 teams. We must not repeat SA and Eng.

Kohli should accept. He will be hailed as bold captain and wont be blamed for losing series which we will irrespective 0,1 or 2 D/N test.
