I am a fan of Ashwin but he misses out in seamer friendly conditions here. And shami misses out as well. If kohli wants he can pick him in place of umesh/bumrah. Thoughts?

Yeah same team for me. But I can understand if Kohli opts for Ashwin over Yadav as it adds more balance to the side and also taking his experience into consideration.

No proper 5th bowler.. pandya can't be trusted with ball

You are right. If it wasn't such a big tournament, i would say that let him bowl 10 Overs. But right now, he doesn't have experience of bowling 10 overs. He hardly bowled during IPL.

I don't think Pandya has bowled ten overs in an odi in his short career. He rarely finishes his 4 overs in T20s. Pandya if he has to play has to fit in top six and I don't think Kohli will take that chance.

If the pitch isnt a flat pancake, I am in favor of going 4 main seamers (Shami,Yadav,Bhuvi,Bumrah) + Jadeja. Blast Lungis and Bakis (probably wont work against SA though) out for a small total, go to hotel early and relax.

play Shami ahead of Pandya, best bet is to bowl the Pakistani out cheaply.

That would mean a big tail.

We cant go by these warm up games and think conditions will be similar in every ODI. In last 11 ODIs, England averaged close to 350.

Bowling out an opposition cheaply usually doesnt happen in an ODI because ball swings only for a few overs and sides can post a decent total.

Having a big hitting all rounder at the back helps and Pandya is a decent seamer as well.

Playing an allrounder means you don't sacrifice either bowling or batting. Playing Pandya at no7 will be weakening the bowling a lot .Since Yuvi is sick can Dhoni bat at no 4 , Jadhav at no 5 with Pandya slotted at no 6 .You will have your full five bowlers whatever combination is decided based on pitch and overhead conditions.

Indians then have to depend on top 3 to deliver big time.

Lack of part timers (batters who can bowl) is hurting our team balance big time. We used to have really good part time bowlers before .. Viru, Sachin, Saurav, Yuvi, Raina etc. We don't have even one now ( Yuvi isn't bowling anymore  ).

With the current team, we can't have all bases covered. Have to decide which part to strengthen .. batting or bowling. Taking current form into consideration, I'd have to say batting. If our top 6 were in their best form, it'd have been possible to go with the best 5 bowlers.

Based on the warm up games so far, looks like 4 pacers + 1 spinner is the combination to go, unless the pitch is very dry where we feel the need to go with 3 pacers + 2 spinners.

People are worrying too much about Pandya's bowling. He may not be as good as our frontline pacers, but he'll do fine, just need to use him at slightly easier phases in the game. But he is very important inclusion for the overall health of the batting order, not just the runs he may score, but psychologically for the batsmen above him to feel there's some strength down the order. Also need to slip in an over or two from Yuvi and Jadhav strategically during the middle overs to give Pandya some breathing space.

S Dhawan

R Sharma

* V Kohli

+ M Dhoni

Y Singh (D Karthik if Yuvi is unfit)

K Jadhav

H Pandya

R Jadeja

B Kumar

U Yadav

J Bumrah

Shami is arguably our best ODI bowler, but I left him out because he doesn't seem 100% fit and all the pacers are bowling well anyway.

There's enough batting and enough bowling in that team, just need to apply themselves and play well.

Couldn't agree more and one of the best posts! :two_thumbs_up:  It's almost as if I'm reading one of my own posts though I would have Karthik in the starting XI irrespective of whether Yuvi is fit or not :agree:

Kartik is batting well...he can replace dhoni.

Play all 4 pacers and jadeja and pandya.

Drop dhoni and uvraj and ashwin.

Kartik is in top form...cant drop him after scoring 94.

If shami is fit ill go with him ahead of umesh. With teams like pak u shud nt give easy runs.....umesh has been fanatstic still can give few runs easy. Cant give to team who is bad with running n hitting.....choke them dnt give easy boundaries.

Also under pressure shami is a lil better as umesh bowled well to in 2013 warmup game to. Again not saying umesh cant handle pressure but shami is ahead of him in any scenario.

Not against umesh, just a minor diff why ill prefer shami over him. But if shamj is unfit umesh is a gr8 replacement

Also pandya shud stay no matter what. If its helpful condition his bowling will also become lethal and we saw that in dharamshal odi

Why I would play such a team bcos

Kartik and pandya are in top batting form..uv shud not play as he has not practiced. Msd also is happy relaxing so let him relax ..as on today kartik is more valuable to team and can bat at 4.

Msd and uvraj don't look capable to bat at no 4 on these fast pitches.

Virat and kartik may bat at 3 and 4.

Pandya and kedar look good at 5 6 followed by jaddu at 7 then pacers.

This aint a test match, mate. 6 bowlers are an overkill even in a test and you are talking about picking them in an ODI. Bowlers can only do so much in an ODI. They will only be there mostly to restrict runs as batting friendly conditions are the norm and you need batting to be able to post big totals or chase them down.

Yadav bowled very well in both practice matches.

He should get in .

I m a big fan of umesh and he is looking ready to  break few bones in this tournament.

He brings in fearlessness to this attack.

Now a days he is laughing at batsman.
