Should we bat first or chase in the finals if we win the toss?

Chasing has been easier this tournament but against Pak in a pressure game you never know.

Pakistan has been a poor chasing team historically, even here almost lost to Lanka in the group match chasing a small total. Besides most of our major triumphs in big matches against them have come batting 1st. Their batting always implodes in the big stage, more so against us.

And are we going to play on a used or fresh wicket on Sunday? That too will affect our decision. Pak has a good bowling unit, they will really test us, more so with their reverse swing which will be amplified on a used wicket. Thoughts? I am personally inclined towards setting a target. Even on a patta a total of 270 is comfortably enough against them, especially in such a high pressure game. But if we chase anything over 250, a top order collapse will bring our middle order batsmen into play and they haven't batted enough this tournament.

Depends on the pitch. If it's a flat pitch from the get go or a used pitch I say bat first. If it looks it would be slightly slower early on and will get better as the day goes on the way it did in our match against SL, I say bowl first.

Either way I'm pretty confident about the team and the match :agree:

We have won defending totals against Pakistan in recent ICC tournaments like in adelaide 2015, Mohali 2011.

Thing is we can do either. I am comfortable either way as we have scored runs batting first and second both in this tournament

But if we win the toss, we must bat first if the pitch is dry.

No team which is batting favorite opts for bowling first id pitch is brilliant to bat. Ganguly made a mistake in 03 in Johannesburg, we shouldn't make the same mistake again.

I would chase, without hesitation.  Pak batting will be under pressure to get a good total, knowing our batting strength.   For their bowlers, its the reverse of 'scoreboard pressure' for batsmen - the scoreboard pressure of defending a total short of par, will prevent their bowlers from bowling with freedom to attack for wickets.     Make your opponent do what they don't want to do.  What do you think Pak would choose if they won the toss?

Bad comparsion - Ganguly was up against a batting juggernaut of a team, VK's XI is fronting up against a team that stains its pants scoring anything over 240.

So if team shyts in its pants scoring 240 then we must op to bat first and not worry about them chasing.

We must bat if pitch looks good to bat.

Not batting first is negative approach. We have hardy lost wickets in this tournaments so players are battinf with confidence.

This is the confidence Ganguly did not show by opting to bowl. We could have put on 300 in final in 03 and might have defended that.

His decision was influenced by the Aus India league stage match in that same World Cup. India batted first and made 125

Chase. None of the team batting first have been sure what the par score is while batting first. We will try too much and lose wickets which is what happened to SA, Aus and England. All matches Pak won was when they chased. The one match we lost, we batted first

Chase if we win toss. Let them put up a score. Their bats wont have a clue what they are supposed to do.

A sunny day(warmest so far in tournament)  on offer. It will get easier as to bat second inning

this is a big decision,am unsure,in finals just bat first but ct this year its all about chasing but 1st game we batted first to perfection may be a repeat of that

Wrong I agree, but he had a reason,  that 125 all out and also till the finals his bowlers were doing well. Bad decision but he had his reasons

Man tournament was so long that whole momentum had shifted and we were different team after that Pakistan game.

Anyways no use of going back.

We have lost just 2 wickets against South Africa and won by 9 wickets today.

Any team who are batting so well should opt to bat first if they win the tods in the final, provided pitch is good to bat on first up.

That is a scenario when they will take risks in their batting. It can pay off. If it does, they will keep taking those risks with more confidence. We are more likely to defend a total of 260 than chase 275, because it is a final with Pakistan

Not just that, his decision was also influenced by weather forecast. According to D/L we were on course to win after 25 overs in spite of our pathetic batting that day. Unfortunately the rain clouds missed the stadium by a whisker.
