Look, the start he and Rahul gave yesterday put India in a very good position. Had India played well in today's first session, match could've been won. Vijay, for all his virtues, has never shown the ability to score as briskly as Dhawan can when on song.

Dhawan has a better Test record than Rohit does, so if India has to play six specialist batsmen, why not Dhawan?

The point is whom do u want on SA pitches against SA attack

Forget scoring briskly how long do u think dhawan will survive in those conditions against those bowlers.

Runs against such side cant be thr criteria for selection against a top side

Rahane needs to show that when in form he can carry the team not just one innings or one match in a series where he shows up.

In Spite of all his scores he has rarely dominated any series in his career. When in form you expect your main batsmen to perform thru out the series.Other than his twin hundred in a single test he has never scored more than a single hundred in any series.

What he has done so far in his career is secure his place in the team but has not really shown he can be a dominating batsman.

Will Hardik Pandya be in the 11 in SA ? This is an important qn to answer.

If so, where is the space for another 6th bat?

I'm not talking about the SA tour in particular. My question is about when we decide to play 6 specialist batsmen. Does it then have to be a question of either Dhawan or Vijay? Would you rather have Rahul-Kohli-Pujara-Vijay-Dhawan-Rahane or Rahul-Kohli-Pujara-Vijay/Dhawan-Rahane-Rohit?

I think hahane needs to be dropped for good.

HE is not part of t20. He is on lifeline in ODIs and now he is absolutely **** in test cricket. If ranji form is any indication, the guy is going to struggle big time in the next couple of test matches. HE is simply not the batsman we need. A highly inconsistent batsman, who supposedly is good in this format but gets out more often than not like a tailender. Pretender of the highest order. THRow him out. * saala.

Please watch test matches closely .

If an inform Vijay played he might have had a partnership with puj day 1 and 2 so things would have been different from thw start. You need a batman that can leave well to open.

just on this . Play 3 openers ? In sa maybe a good ploy

For me an all rounder has to play ........its a must

We finally have bowlers who can bowl 140+......and in overseas they ll be the leader not spinner which means their work load wud be more. Now a 5th bowler bowling 10-15 overs will reduce their workload and allow them to bowl at full intensity but if a 5th bowler is not their they ll hold themselves

So 6 batsman shudnt be even an option. 3 openers means 6 batsman only at the end of the day

Hypothetical scenario:

The series is drawn 1-1. Pandya has not performed with bat or ball. The wicket prepared for the decider is bowler friendly. Would you still go with 5 specialist batsmen?

If u ask my opinion, m going to take shankar for every overseas tour and he ll be my pick in bowler freindly condition

About bowler freindly condition - well dhawan n rohit themseleves wud be sitting ducks their

possible in India where two spinners bowl a lot but not overseas. Overseas, we struggle because pacers has to bowl a lot and they lose intensity. Need that 5th batting-bowling seam alrounder.  Dhawan will struggle anyway even if he bats at 6 overseas against their pacers.

What makes you so confident about Shankar's ability? Has he done well overseas on A tours?

I hve seen him bat ........looks a solid batsman . Obv he can fail but atleast can be tried.......dhawan n rohit have already failed big time overseas . Technically shankar looks far more sound then both of em
