What he dropped yesterday was a normal catch, slightly tougher than a dolly at this level and how he fielded in yesterdays match had more impact than how he fielded in past matches. Like I have said, everyone drops catches. It shouldn’t matter whether the game result is impacted or not by the catcj drop, everyone is culprit if they have a dropped catch. Kohli and co do it all the time. So if a new guy does it once, its fine to not make a big deal out of it that we don’t select him for fielding. You are telling me if his drop catch would have not resulted in south african win, then you would have selected him next game? Its all luck wherher the other team makes it count or not.

Yes, middle order batters should not be made to open, but surely they have to possess that much ability that they can adapt to 4,5,6,7 positions. They should adapt to those positions but I am tellingnyou already that Iyer is raw, so he can adapt to certain things like rotate but you can’t expect him to hit like Pandya. Same with Pandey. Both Manish Pandey and Iyer are similar kind that they won’t be able to hit in the end. They will do fine both of them if they come early to bat around 20th over. I am open to any of these two olayers to play at 4 or KL Rahul. Any 3 of them can take spot 4. They all are equally good for that.

I am not not saying he will score 18 runs and drop a catch every match. He will score 50's in some and take more catches than he took yesterday in future. However, he was flop yesterday in both the skills that he can contribute. He has played just 4 matches and this was his toughest assignment yesterday. Obviously his two 50's against Lanka in India were match winning contributions, however runs in this series would be valued more imo.

adi B Posted February 11, 2018 Posted February 11, 2018 Pandey, jhadav, iyer are not international class but if they have been picked I think deserve a decent run of around 7-8 odis before discarding especially iyer .they should be tried at the position they feel comfortable batting

We had Dhoni, Raina, Yuvi who occupied middle order for most part of their career. They could build an innings if required and they could hit sixers as well for most part of their career, except for decline or last stages of ODI career.

Sixes aren’t needed as long as they can compensate with boundaries and score 8-10 run per over which I think in the lomger run, they will be capable of. Problem is such things don’t happen after one series. These players should be given longer run than just 2 games. You know how many games we gave to Rahane and Rohit, if we can give half the game to these guys, they will prosper for sure. i really feel we are missing the best od Hooda.

Problem is we are in a situation where we need 3 middle order batters at same time who can be versatile. If there was just one middle order player that we were searching , then we could have coped somewhat better. In this series only 4 players have made significant contributions. Shikhar, Virat, Kuldeep and Yuz. They are covering all the other flops. Six hitting ability is important imo in ODI format nowadays. Edited February 11, 2018 by Straight Drive
SandeepMotta Posted February 11, 2018 Author Posted February 11, 2018 Unfortunately with Dhoni in the squad it's difficult for youngsters to get a long run in the middle order. Dhoni sucks all the momentum out, the batten at the other end have to slog and end up getting out. Dhoni remains not out, team loses but his fans are happy.
vvvslaxman Posted February 11, 2018 Posted February 11, 2018 I am just going by looseness in his shots. Not writing him off based on few innings. He could improve. You never know. or he can survive with this technique. We will find out.

express bowling Posted February 11, 2018 Posted February 11, 2018 Shreyas Iyer seems to change his technique a lot. Saw him batting against Unadkat in a Ranji match in 2015-16 on a bouncy track. Was tackling bounce horribly ... moving away on the leg side and slashing wildly. Did not seem comfortable. Saw him in mid-2017 batting against SA-A in SA. It was a final match. He was using the back and across trigger movement and handling bounce and off-stump deliveries well. Cut down the loose shots.Scored 140 odd and won the match for us. I was impressed and wanted him to play for India. In the 2017-18 season, playing ODIs, he seems to have rediscovered some of the bad habits of 2 years ago. Moving away against bounce again and flashing at off-stump deliveries. Needs to settle down to the better technique he developed if he wants to play for India regularly.

Because as i started playing cricket with cricket ball , i was doing the same lol. I was so uncomfortable that i backed away exposing all 3 stumps and slashing. It is a sign of not being comfortable. Anil Kumble always did that. But because of his reach he was able to get away with that technique.

Moving away against the bouncing ball cannot be the default technique of a top-order batter like Shreyas. He can do it occasionally when the match situation demands improvisation. I would like him to go back to his A-tour technique of playing bounce.

After his century in Aus, he should've been given longer run. Besides he's a gun fielder. Since the 104* against AUS, Pandey's has been given chances but has failed to take them. You might argue not enough chances, and I would generally agree, but IMO he's had more chances than many new players get, and he's played poorly. It's disappointing. Here'e Pandey's record after Aus century: 18 14 5 251 50* 27.88 292 85.95 0 1 2 24 2 14 innings with just one 50, and an avg. of 27.88 despite 5 not-outs. What's worse is that on more than one occasion he's got out playing a brainless shot. Which is the sort of thing that doesn't endear you to the team management or selectors. There's a reason he's at the back of the queue at the moment. Shreyas needs more chances still. Worst thing that happened to our middle order( for Pandey et al) was the re introduction of Yuvraj. Otherwise Manish, and someone else, could've gotten more opportunities. Edited February 11, 2018 by Dada's Army
