Kolkata building new stadium next to Eden

Just watched Ganguly's interview with Harsha. Learned that Koklata is building a new stadium with 25k-30k a couple of miles from Eden Gardens. Eden will supposedly retain its iconic value (whatever that means), but Dada wants the new stadium to host tests and to be the base for the state's cricket association. The excuse is that Eden is an army ground so it does not provide that flexibility that is needed.

 

Not sure about the point of this really. If it was not Saurav Ganguly I would suspect a corruption angle. Eden is a truly remarkable ground. Would be a pity if it did not host every international match in Kolkata.

Agree, unfortunately. This is disgraceful. Cities that have a good cricket stadium just don't need a second one. When you have possibly the best stadium in the world, and you are building a second one next to it......reeks of corruption.

For me a more relevant step would be to bring down unnecessary structures to create ecosystems that benefit both the environment and other living organisms

I don't know the story behind Wankhade. But Brabourse was certainly no Eden Gardens. Mumbai should have a better stadium than Brabourne. I don't know if vast improvements were possible at Brabourne, though, to make it world class.

Not apples to apples. It was built in 1970s. This is 2018, which has different priorities including environmental concerns

This should not be compared as one was built in a different generation (40+ years ago), and this one is to be built now in a time that has its own set of challenges

Why not extend these facilities to other places? Kolkata has one of the top 3 most iconic cricket stadiums in the world, aur kitna chahiye unko? A 25-30k seater in Durgapur (170 km from Eden) would have been terrific... Paschim & Purba Bardhaman area is the fastest growing region in Bengal and destined to be the next big thing in East India in the coming decades with a huge flourishing middle class population and rapid industrial and service sector development. Tragic that Asansol/Durgapur/Bardhaman belt (3 million population) has no big stadium worth mentioning.

 

Or they could have given a try in North Bengal. All major cricket states in India are branching out to other cities while CAB doesn't even care about cricket's growth outside Kolkata.

Look if you want cricket to improve then there is a need for a second ground. Eden is an Iconic stadium and CB cannot have low key games being played there everyday. 

 

 

If you get the environment angle in then there is not much to argue. Isn't cricket on the whole not bad for environment? Loads of resources are lost in hosting every cricket match.

Sometimes I think cricket is an elite sport with no place in India. I am from a very poor/modest background and we use to play with one pad on the front leg only. I wish kabbadi and football were more popular.

 

Why spend money on fancy stadiums when there is no running water.

Hats off Zen for this comment and your ideas.
There should be step by step reforestation of free spaces and creation of a restricted entry green zone in every urban area.

I don't understand the big deal here. It is perfectly ok to have two quality stadiums in a metro city. We have a huge cricket crazy population and a second ground is useful for domestic cricket when the first is busy for many days in case of international games. London has Lords & the Oval too and our actual swami army count will any day outnumber their barmy army. 

 

Where did this poverty nonsense come from ? Is the gormint paying for the ground from the health & education ministry or is it coming from the BCCI coffers ? Govts make money from cricket, its not the other way.

We have this **** in mumbai as well where two stadiums sit next to each other plus there is a ground at bkc.

London has Lords & the Oval too and our actual swami army count will any day outnumber their barmy army.

I am from Kolkata and as someone who has played in CAB for a while, football is way more popular in West Bengal than football.
A para football match creates more buzz than a Ranji Trophy match than ever.
People are crazy for football here.
I do agree-Football once upon took a significant backseat for cricket, after Dada happened ofcourse
But football is seeing a renewed resurgence of late and with the expansion of ISL, more money into East Bengal and SRK trying to buy Mohun Bagan.
I will say that though cricket is still the top sport kids are choosing to play because of the money and subsequent glamour.
But Cricket as a spectator sport has no value in Kolkata beyond International matches and IPL.
We already have a decent ground for domestics in Jadavpur University 2nd campus.
If he thinks that Mini Eden will bring In more audience then he is clearly delusional.
It is a project that is gonna fail and that too super hard

When it comes to sports bengalis were always ahead of rest of India. When I was in calcutta it was always football. Saurav changed all that but I always respected Bengali love affair with big round ball.
