Surrey’s Ollie Pope and Chris Woakes replace Dawid Malan and Ben Stokes respectively in the squad from the first Test at Edgbaston.

“Ollie Pope has made an exceptional start to his first class career. He has reached a 1000 first class runs in just 15 matches and is the first division’s stand-out batsman this season with 684 runs at 85. The selection panel believe that Ollie’s performances and character suggest he is well suited to international cricket,” chief selector Ed Smith spoke after naming the squad.

England squad for the second Test: Joe Root (captain), Moeen Ali, James Anderson, Jonny Bairstow (wk), Stuart Broad, Jos Buttler, Alastair Cook, Sam Curran, Keaton Jennings, Ollie Pope, Jamie Porter, Adil Rashid, Chris Woakes.

There was a time when we used to give break to young talent while 30 year old county has beens debuted for England and now the reverse in happening ...We're going backward while England is going forward.

Youngster here means debutante or new player. Siraj himself is 24. You will be surprised to know we have just one new fast bowler debuted after our last tour to England in 4 years and that's Bumrah.

Sorry, different countries different meanings 

I saw a list on here yesterday of dates when each Indian made their debut .I was shocked for the reason you give of how long each player has been involved in Test cricket .A perfect example being Dharwan who has managed to play Test Cricket for 5 years without being a Test Opener .

Our Test side is still below average. Terrible overseas. Bowling and batting are clueless overseas. Bowling is at least ok at home and keeps the dissenters (like me) from having a full on meltdown

Bowling looks weak, you don't have any express fast bowler in domestics?

But India is the no 1 Test team in the world . i have no idea how they received so many points only dominating home series

By not loosing test matches to West Indies and Sri lanka at their own fortress for a start.

The Overtons and Wood I guess but they're not good enough. There's Stone and Brookes at Warwickshire and Chappell at Leicester but they're very raw and nowhere near Test level
